Description
Founders: El Enemigo was founded by Alejandro Vigil, a renowned winemaker and vineyard director at Catena Zapata, and Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolás Catena, the founder of Catena Zapata. The concept for these unique wines was born on the day that Nicolas Catena received the 'Decanter Man of the Year' Award. During the walk after the event, his daughter Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil decided to start making wine together with deep respect for the history and tradition of the Catena family. Adrianna Catena is a passionate historian and Alejandro Vigil is at that time Head Winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata. Alejandro later receives the highest ever rating for a Cabernet Franc by Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate for his El Gran Enemigo Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary.
The El Enemigo Chardonnay is a complex and elegant Chardonnay with a nice balance between fruitiness and minerality, characterized by notes of apple, citrus and subtle wood influences. This Chardonnay has a controlled alcohol content and great freshness (not unimportant nowadays with the many heavy and high in alcohol Chardonnays of 14 or more) and finishes dry and very tasty. Vigil likes to have some flor in some of his wines, which gives them a special complexity and palatability. It was produced with grapes from Gualtallary, which always adds extra freshness when picked at the right moment. The wine matured for nine months in 500-liter oak barrels and there is always some flor in the élevage.

The 2021 Chardonnay was phenomenal, way above the expectations for the price point. It was produced with pristine grapes from Gualtallary that in the cool 2021 vintage achieved 13.5% alcohol but kept a low pH of 3.05 and 7.7 grams of acidity. It matured in oak barrels that were not topped up and let to develop a veil of flor yeast. The barrels were 500-liter ones, and despite 35% of them being new, the wine doesn't feel marked by the wood. It has the chalky texture of the limestone soils. Superb! This is a bargain that is approachable now, but it should also develop nicely in bottle. 19,600 bottles produced.
There are some new wines at El Enemigo, a project from Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena that does not stop growing. They produce an impressive 1.2 million bottles between all the ranges. They are also going to plant some more vineyards with Chardonnay.

A consistently impressive chardonnay that highlights purity and saline minerality. Salted lemons, sliced apples, seashells and stones drizzled with a touch of oak spice. Full-bodied yet tense and lightly saline on the palate, with bright acidity and a pure, lengthy finish. Nervy and simply delicious. Drink or hold.

From: Argentina: New White Releases (Oct 2024)
The 2022 Chardonnay hails from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels, with some under velo de flor, this bright green-gold wine reveals aromas of peaches and pears with a hint of cashew and a slightly oaky backdrop. Dry and lean, the palate lingers with a chalky mouthfeel. This is a modern high-altitude Chardonnay.
