Description
Founders: El Enemigo was founded by Alejandro Vigil, a renowned winemaker and vineyard director at Catena Zapata, and Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolás Catena, the founder of Catena Zapata. The concept for these unique wines originated on the day Nicolas Catena received the "Decanter Man of the Year" Award. During the walk after the event, his daughter Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil decided to start making wine together, with deep respect for the history and tradition of the Catena family. Adrianna Catena is a passionate historian, and Alejandro Vigil is the head winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata at the time. Alejandro later received the highest rating ever for a Cabernet Franc from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate for his El Gran Enemigo Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary.
The El Enemigo Chardonnay is a complex and elegant Chardonnay with a beautiful balance between fruitiness and minerality, characterized by notes of apple, citrus, and subtle oak influences. This Chardonnay has a controlled alcohol content and great freshness (not insignificant these days with many contemporary heavy and high-alcohol Chardonnays of 14.5 or more) and finishes dry and very flavorful. Vigil likes to have a touch of flor in some of his wines, which gives them a special complexity and palate. It was produced with grapes from Gualtallary, which always adds extra freshness when picked at the right time. The wine was aged for nine months in 500-liter oak barrels, and there is always some flor in the élevage.

The 2023 Chardonnay derives from Adrianna Vineyard, was vinified in 500-liter barrique and incorporates some biological aging and a small portion of a five-year-old solera. Leading with a bright, citrus-driven nose bolstered by an elegant nutty richness, the palate is vibrant, textural and seamless, concluding with a succulent and nuanced finish. As with the whole El Enemigo range, this offers a fantastic value that entirely transcends the price point.
A collaboration between Catena's winemaking director Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena, El Enemigo is among a select handful of reference-point producers in Argentina. The portfolio focuses on the Uco Valley with inclusions spanning Luján de Cuyo, Maipú and eastern Mendoza, each region containing reference-point bottlings rendered with unwavering clarity. The portfolio begins with an overperforming and affordable range of varietal wines, including a set of site-specific, old-vine Bonarda rarely produced with such detail and complexity. The superb Gran Enemigo range contains a transcendent expression of Torrontés and a beautiful red blend, culminating in a centerpiece quartet of single-vineyard Cabernet Francs. I found these firmly among Argentina's most exciting wines, cementing the variety's rightful place alongside Malbec as a vehicle for expressing the Uco Valley. Also at the top of the pyramid is the As Bravas range, which centers around a phenomenal Malbec bottling and a newly introduced Garnacha.
