Description
About Domaine Marc Colin & Fils
Domaine Marc Colin & Fils is located in the village of Saint-Aubin, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. Founded by Marc Colin, the estate is now run by his children, who continue the tradition with a modern, precise style. The family owns plots in some of Burgundy's most famous appellations, including Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Montrachet itself. Their wines are known for their purity, refined oak use, and expression of the terroir.
The estate focuses on sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar. Each vineyard is vinified separately to optimally express the character of the soil and location. The Montrachet Grand Cru is the estate's absolute flagship and is among Burgundy's rarest wines.
The location of Montrachet Grand Cru
The Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard lies on the border between the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. This small terroir of just eight hectares is among the most prestigious wineries in the world. The soil, composed of chalky clay and marl, produces powerful, concentrated wines with a unique minerality. The south-facing location offers optimal sun exposure, while the altitude and ventilation ensure freshness and balance.
The Montrachet vineyards produce wines renowned for their complexity, depth, and unparalleled length. The expression of terroir here is unparalleled – each producer offers their own interpretation of this legendary parcel, and Marc Colin's is among the most refined.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The 2022 harvest in Burgundy was exceptionally balanced: healthy grapes with perfect ripeness and retained acidity. The grapes for this Montrachet are 100% Chardonnay and are hand-harvested in small crates to prevent damage. A gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation follow in the cellar. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, only a small portion of which are new, to preserve the elegance of the fruit. The wine then matures for 12 to 15 months on fine lees for added depth and texture.
The benefits of the Magnum version
This Montrachet is bottled in a magnum (1.5 liters), a size that is not only more festive but also allows for slower and more stable aging. The wine develops more subtly and retains its freshness longer, resulting in a more complex and harmonious whole. For collectors and connoisseurs, a magnum Montrachet is a valuable addition to the cellar, offering an even longer drinking window than a standard bottle.
Color, smell and taste
The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine Marc Colin displays a bright golden yellow color with brilliant reflections. On the nose, the wine opens with aromas of ripe peach, pear, lime blossom, and subtle notes of hazelnut, brioche, and white flowers. As the wine opens, layers of citrus, honey, and a mineral salinity emerge.
On the palate, the wine is simultaneously powerful and silky smooth. Its structure is full, with impressive concentration and a lively, refined acidity that balances everything. The finish is long, energetic, and layered, with a subtle touch of oak and a lingering sense of freshness. This Montrachet combines opulence with precision and reveals itself as a true Grand Cru with excellent aging potential.
A top-level white Burgundy
The 2022 vintage reaffirms Marc Colin's reputation as a master of terroir-driven wines. The Montrachet Grand Cru is intense yet not overpowering, rich yet refined, and possesses a tension that makes it exceptional. In magnum form, this is a wine for special occasions, but also an investment in pure Burgundian heritage. Taste this wine now and experience its youthful energy; age it for decades to come and be rewarded with layers and complexity.

There are two barrels of the 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a deep, full-bodied and concentrated wine redolent of pear, hazelnuts, sweet citrus fruit and toasted bread. Layered, textural and multidimensional, it concludes with a delicately honeyed finish.
The 2022 vintage is the finest I can remember tasting at Domaine Marc Colin—and with years such as 2017 and 2020, the last decade has been mostly benevolent. As readers will remember, now that the domaine is smaller following his two brothers' secessions, he is able to be ultra-precise about harvest date, sampling parcel by parcel, he tells me, and small volumes of wine mean longer élevage is feasible too. Percentages of new oak are modest, but foudres and larger barrels are also out of the picture, Damien finding most coopers' 228-liter barrels more consistent and in any case, better adapted to vinifying smaller quantities.

Marc Colin comes from a wine family in Burgundy with a strong reputation. Together with his two sons, he manages a domain of 20 hectares located in the village of Saint-Aubin in the Côte de Beaune.
Marc Colin's production
He exclusively owns top appellations: Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Premier Cru vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin and Pernand-Vergelesses. This is very exceptional. This domaine is known for its quality, yet Colin sees an opportunity to continually improve this. That is why he is receiving increasingly favorable reviews in the international press. Colin's wines excel in purity and combine power with elegance. Perhaps a bit shy in their youth, but with enormous storage potential. Traditionally minded, he vinifies his wines with a remarkable intuition for nature. Although he is open to innovation, he sticks to a traditional style and strives for optimal freshness in his white wines and avoids the wood-dominated Chardonnay type. He is the most awarded winegrower from St-Aubin and owner of Restaurant Le Chassagne, which has 1 Michelin star.
