Description
Domaine Evenstad: Burgundy from American passion for French perfection
Domaine Evenstad is a notable player in Burgundy. Founded by Grace and Ken Evenstad, the American wine pioneers who made their name with Domaine Serene in Oregon, this French branch marks a return to the origins of Pinot Noir. In 2017, the Evenstad family acquired Château de la Crée in Santenay and founded Domaine Evenstad, with the mission of combining the finesse of Burgundy with the focus and precision that made them successful in the United States.
The vineyards of Domaine Evenstad are spread across prestigious villages in the Côte d'Or, including Santenay, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault and Chassagne. The plots are rich in chalky soils, enjoy an ideal microclimate and are farmed organically and sustainably, with an eye for soil life and biodiversity. The focus is on terroir-true wines, mainly based on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Pinot Noir from Bourgogne Côte d'Or: a pure and stylish calling card
The 2022 Domaine Evenstad Bourgogne Côte d'Or is an excellent introduction to the (high-end) style of the domain. Coming from carefully selected plots within the demarcated Côte d'Or zone, this Pinot Noir is an expressive and refined wine with characteristic freshness, depth and elegance.
2022 was an excellent vintage in Burgundy. After a relatively dry and warm spring and summer, with sufficient water reserves from the winter, the grapes were able to ripen homogeneously. The harvest started early, with healthy and perfectly ripe bunches. The balance between acidity, alcohol and phenolic ripeness was particularly good, resulting in wines with energy, structure and aromatic precision.
Vinification and maturation: Burgundian finesse under modern control
After the manual harvest, the grapes were rigorously selected, destemmed and spontaneously fermented in small vats. During vinification, a soft extraction was deliberately chosen, with light pigeage and remontage, to preserve the elegance of the Pinot Noir.
The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, a small proportion of which were new, to support the delicate character of the fruit without overpowering it. After a maturation period of approximately 12 months, the wine was bottled with minimal intervention, unfiltered or lightly filtered, depending on the vintage.
Colour, aroma and taste: Burgundian finesse in every sip
The 2022 Bourgogne Côte d'Or shows itself in the glass with a bright ruby red color. On the nose, the wine opens with floral notes of violets and roses, followed by fresh aromas of raspberry, cranberry and red cherry. Subtle earthy undertones and a hint of spices such as white pepper and cloves give the wine extra layers.
In the mouth the wine is elegant, juicy and refined. The structure is light-footed but present, with lively acidity and fine tannins that provide length and drinkability. The finish is pure and mineral, with a subtle saltiness reminiscent of chalky soils. This wine is already particularly enjoyable now, but can also refine in the bottle for a few years.
Bourgogne Côte d'Or is a regional appellation within Burgundy, but with a more limited geographical demarcation and stricter rules than the generic Bourgogne AOC. It offers winemakers the opportunity to position their wines a little better without going to village or premier cru level.
