Description
The wine has matured for 10 months on French oak. It is a full, fruity, powerful Mencia wine. F ul, round and fresh in taste with aromas of ripe black and red fruit such as black cherries, blueberries, blackberries, ripe raspberries and strawberries. But also slightly spicy and a touch earthy with refined tannins. The aftertaste is long and with beautiful fruit and some notes of vanilla due to the wood aging. This 100% mencia is best served slightly cool. The Petalos won 1st place at the Prix de Sommelier (winner for red wines) and the 2019 received no less than 93+/100 points from the Wine Spectator (Parker).
Did you know: Pétalos = flower petals and MencÃa is also called the 'Pinot Noir of Spain'.
All the vines of Descendientes de José Palacios have been farmed organically and biodynamically from the beginning. The wines have been certified organic since the 2020 harvest. The grapes for Petalós come from various villages in the Bierzo, mainly Corullón and Villafranca del Bierzo. The total vineyard area covers 90 hectares. In Corullón the soil consists mainly of slate with occasional quartzites and sandstone mixed with clay. The other villages have a soil of clay with quartzites and pebbles. All the vineyards are farmed organically. They are located on steep slopes at an altitude between 450 meters and 1,100 meters. Petalós consists of 92% mencÃa, the main grape variety of Bierzo. The remaining 8% is a blend of local red grape varieties Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne, Negreda plus three white grape varieties, Valenciana, Jerez, Godello. The age of the vines is between 40 and 90 years old. After the manual harvest, the grapes are partially destemmed and crushed. The alcoholic fermentation takes place spontaneously in a combination of stainless steel and wooden barrels. The wine then matures for another 10 months on wood. The wine is clarified and bottled unfiltered.

1. Grilled chicken with roasted red pepper and thyme
The light spiciness of the chicken and the sweet notes of roasted peppers complement the red fruit and floral nuances of the wine. The juiciness of the meat supports the fresh structure.
2. Roasted beet salad with goat cheese and walnuts
The earthy flavour of beetroot enhances the mineral side of the wine, while goat cheese and walnuts provide creaminess and texture. The whole forms a harmonious, refined palette.
3. Mushroom risotto with fresh herbs and Parmesan
The umami of mushrooms brings out the savoury character of the wine, while the herbs and cheese provide structure and balance against the fruity profile.
4. Slow-cooked veal cheek with carrot and juniper berry jus
The tender, gelatinous meat matches the silky structure of the wine, while the carrot and juniper accentuate the earthy and spicy layers in the glass.
5. Tuna steak with lentils and red wine-shallot reduction
The firm structure of the tuna matches the freshness and light tannins of the MencÃa. The lentils and reduction bring depth without being overpowering.
6. Roasted quail with cherries, mushrooms and polenta
The soft gamey taste of quail supports the elegant body of the wine. The cherries enhance the red fruit, and the creamy polenta makes the whole rich and balanced.

The 2022 Pétalos was produced with 85% MencÃa, 10% white grapes and 5% other reds from over 90 hectares, 20% owned by them and the rest from 180 families. It fermented with some full clusters in oak and stainless steel vats and matured in barrels of different sizes for 10 months. It's clearly more Mediterranean, with notes of rockrose and other aromatic herbs, juicy and round, more fruit-driven, aromatic, velvety and very pleasant and easy to drink. It has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.54. It's still not all bottled, as it's done in different lots, for a total of around 270,000 bottles and 3,000 magnums.
I tasted the bottled 2022s and barrel samples from 2023 from Descendientes de José Palacios in Bierzo. 2022 was a very challenging year, but surprisingly, the wines are more balanced and better than what they expected. The alcohol is lower than anticipated. It was a very warm and dry summer, and the vines got blocked—or, at least, the alcohol didn't go that high. But the acidity started dropping. Yields were high, and the white grapes were very good; they used a lot of white grapes, almost the maximum allowed, 10% to 12%, when they normally use between 6% and 8% to co-ferment with the reds. The wines are a little rounder and more generous than the 2023s (or 2021s), very approachable and juicy.
2023 looked like a very good and cool year early on but with a massive mildew attack, even more in lower parts of Bierzo on the valley floor than in the higher-altitude zones like the slopes of Corullón. It was a very variable season with a warm summer, but not as warm as in other parts of Spain. And 35 liters of constant drizzle during the first two weeks of the harvest gave them a lot of work, and they harvested La Faraona six different times! In 2023, they will bottle another tiny plot separately, Al Chelo.
Is it a coincidence (or could it be destiny?) that the alternative name of Valdafoz in some documents was Al Chelo? Because Chelo was the name of Ricardo's mother, who died from COVID-19. So, the wine was destined to be. It's from a very steep plot, the steepest they have, up to 70% in some parts. 2023 was an even more generous crop than 2022 (the effect of the fertilization with the compost), and they had to green harvest; the wines have better balance, and it doesn't feel like a warm year. It's a vintage that has a tendency toward reduction, not as much as 2020, but still reductive. But it's an elegant, stony reduction. The 2023s could very well be the finest, most elegant and aromatic vintage they have produced to date. More news about them next year. The prices for the 2023s have not yet been set.

The 2022 Pétalos is MencÃa & others from Bierzo. About 30% of the grapes come from Corullón, with the rest from the valley. In an infusion-like style, the 2022 offers pomegranate, dried flower and violet hints in a reductive context. It finishes compact and slate-textured, with fine fruit flavors. Fresh on the palate, it mirrors its aromatic profile.
