How does this wine taste?

How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.

The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.

How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.

How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Clos Fourtet Winery

Clos Fourtet is an iconic Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, situated on the limestone plateau just outside the historic village. The château has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages and is now run by the Cuvelier family. Its style is characterized by precision, tension, and terroir-driven elegance, emphasizing the chalky soil profile. Sustainable vineyard practices and meticulous selection form the foundation of its quality. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region and year 2022

2022 was a warm and concentrated year in Saint-Émilion, with ripe fruit and a firm structure. However, the limestone plateau of Clos Fourtet retained sufficient freshness. The result is a powerful yet refined wine with clear terroir expression and impressive balance.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The 2022 vintage is composed of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The high Merlot component provides roundness and depth, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc add structure, tension, and aromatic refinement. The chalky soils give the wine its characteristic minerality and length.

Vinification and maturation

After rigorous selection, the grapes are vinified separately to ensure maximum precision. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, which contributes to integration and complexity without overpowering the terroir. The focus is on a balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and refined tannins.

Color, smell and taste

Deep ruby red in color. The nose is distinctly aromatic with notes of blackcurrant and cassis, complemented by lime, iron, graphite, and subtle hints of fresh herbs like basil and thyme.

The palate is medium to full-bodied, with polished and fully integrated tannins. The chalky texture adds tension and length, while the ripe fruit blends harmoniously with mineral notes. The finish is long, refined, and exceptionally balanced.

Magnum size 1.5 liter

This 2022 Clos Fourtet is offered in magnum. The larger size allows for slower and more even aging, resulting in added complexity and refinement. Magnum bottles are known for their excellent aging potential and are highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.

Drinking window and development

With 97 points, this 2022 vintage ranks among the absolute top Saint-Émilion wines in this powerful vintage. The wine needs several years to fully express itself and will develop beautifully from around 2027 onwards, with a long future in the cellar.

Summary of professional reviews

The 2022 Clos Fourtet (97 points) is praised for its aromatic intensity, chalky minerality, and polished, long tannins. Blackcurrant, graphite, and subtle spice combine to create a harmonious, perfectly balanced Saint-Émilion with excellent aging potential.

  • Premier Grand Cru Classé B de Saint-Émilion

Clos Fourtet owes its reputation to the Rulleau and Carles families, lords of Figeac, who acquired these vineyards in the 18th century with a special natural drainage. In 2001, Fourtet came into the possession of the Cuvelier family, who kept Fourtet's status as 1st Grand Cru Classé with great passion and investment. This noble 1st Grand Cru Classé is located right in front of the great church of Saint-Emilion, almost in the historic heart of the ancient town. The cellars of the walled vineyards (the Clos) consist of no less than three floors of corridors carved in the caves. Almost as impressive as the wine.

Chateau Clos Fourtet
