Description
The 2022 vintage will experience a relatively mild winter with water shortages over the first three months of the year. May and June were dry months, despite a hailstorm at the end of June, which had a limited impact on the vineyard. The beginning of the summer remains extremely dry, with temperatures above average and 4 major heat waves between June and August. The first glass berries appear on July 30th. Based on the experience of the 2018 vintage, which was particularly dry and sunny in Bordeaux, the team is working to set the start date of the harvest as precisely as possible. The peak ripeness of the Merlots is indeed limited and is essential to maintain a certain freshness and tension in the wines. The Cabernet, on the other hand, has the ability to withstand greater extremes of conditions, especially on the Montrose terroir. On September 2nd, the first Merlots were picked, the Cabernets then followed one by one, the others perfectly and the harvest ended on September 22nd with the vineyard in perfect sanitary condition. The grapes are naturally rich and concentration is judged.
2022 certainly marks the decade with a radiant vintage allowing the full power and resilience of Montrose terroir to be expressed.
The Montrose 2022 is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The first nose is surprisingly open, intense, complex and frank. We find subtle aromas of jasmine and Morello cherries. On the breath, mentholated, pomaded notes emerge, followed by aromas of blond tobacco, spices (pepper), baskets of red fruits (blackberries). On the palate, the attack is frank, fresh and invigorating. The mouth widens very quickly in the middle and becomes soft and salty. The tannin structure is powerful but wrapped in a velvet glove. The persistent finish does not diminish in intensity and tirelessly plays the same precise, single score. The Vintage 2022 is the expression of the lively energy of Montrose that is harmoniously tamed.

The 2022 Montrose is such a compelling wine that assigning it a bracketed score seems a mere formality. A brilliant terroir, impeccable viticulture, perfectly timed harvest dates and judicious extraction have aligned to deliver a monument in the making, reminiscent of a far purer, more precise, modern-day version of the 1990 vintage at this address. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, violets, iris, pencil lead and cigar wrapper, it's full-bodied, deep and authoritative, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, elegantly muscular core that's framed by supple, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, resonant finish. A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, this only confirms Montrose's status as a de facto first growth and unquestionably one of the contemporary Médoc's very greatest estates.

Score : 97-98
A very powerful and structured Montrose with steely tannins that run the length of the wine. It's compacted and muscular with an extremely long finish. Graphite and spices in the aftertaste. This should be terrific after the elevage. From organically grown grapes. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Montrose was picked 2 to 22 September comprising all four grape varieties and all the Cabernet Franc, with 13% pressed wine, matured in 60% new oak. There is 14.5% alcohol this year, which is less than 2018. It has an extremely pure nose with black cherries and blueberry. Quite floral in style with hints of blood orange percolating through with time. The palate is very precise with exceptional mineralité and tension. Very focused, superb concentration, with what is becoming Montrose's trademark sense of symmetry and sustained aftertaste, this could be the finest Saint-Estèphe in 2022.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
