For over four decades, the Barrett family has been making wine at Chateau Montelena, praised for wines that combine intensity and power with a lush, rich texture—wines that express the unique characteristics of the land from which they originate. They prefer to speak of Terroir wines here, as they shun cellar techniques that use a chemistry set to compensate for an unremarkable terroir or fruit.
The Chateau and the estate's vineyards were originally established in the 1880s at the foot of Mount St. Helena in Calistoga, on the northern side of Napa Valley, and the winery was in operation until 1949. The rise of Chateau Montelena came primarily after Steven Spurrier organized a blind wine tasting in 1976. The best French whites from Burgundy and the best reds from Bordeaux were compared to the best the US had to offer at the time in Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. And as it turned out: the Napa Valley houses from the USA won in both categories. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars for red, and for white… Montelena. The wine world was shaken to its foundations, as you can imagine, and American (read: Napa Valley) winemakers were truly put on the map for the first time. This is also known as the Judgment of Paris. The most entertaining way to learn the whole story – if you haven't already – is to watch the film Bottle Shock (starring the brilliant and tragically late Alan Rickman as Steven Spurrier). Read more about this famous winery under the tab: Winery.
Owner/founder Jim Barrett bought the historic site in 1972 and restored the winery and vineyards with the goal of producing a Cabernet Sauvignon of the highest quality—and he certainly succeeded—but nowadays they are also known for their unique Chardonnays, which are characterized by great acidity that also ensures the wines age fantastically.
The Montelena Chardonnay Napa Valley has a beautiful golden straw-yellow color in the glass. On the nose, the wine opens with cinnamon and ripe peach, enhanced by aromas of melon, pear, honeysuckle, and spices, with lovely fruitiness, acidity of green apple, and vanilla from the oak aging. On the palate, the wine is very elegant and, in style, more like a fine Burgundy than very full-bodied Californian wines. We taste some citrus and orange, and there is good tension between the fruit, the lovely acidity, and a refined alcohol level, with a fine texture and minerality beautifully contrasted by freshly baked bread due to the 10 months of aging in new oak.
FUN FACT: In the Attachment tab, you will find the official factsheet for this fine wine. We will automatically send it to you upon ordering this wine. The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and you will also receive a nice discount if you come to pick it up. We are located almost next to the highway with ample parking. |

The 2020 Chardonnay was released in October 2022. As usual, it's a non-malolactic fermentation wine, matured in a relatively small proportion of new French oak, and so it reveals hints of apple, tangerine and lime on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, it's sappy, a bit linear and vibrant on the palate, finishing crisp and long. I've capped the aging estimate at a decade, but past vintages have aged successfully for 20 years or more, depending on your preferences.
One of the historic California estates that put Napa on the map following the Paris Tasting of 1976, for some reason Chateau Montelena was largely neglected by my immediate predecessor at RPWA. There is always something new to chase, so I suspect it was more that than anything else. It can sometimes be difficult to find a reason to visit longtime estates that just continue along, turning out classic wines, regardless of fads or fashion.
The Chardonnay comes from an estate-grown parcel in Oak Knoll under the lee of Mount Veeder, plus another grower in Oak Knoll and one in Coombsville. The style remains resolutely true to the historic model, with fermentation kicking off in tank before transfer into barrels (15 - 25% new French oak), and no malolactic fermentation. The wine stays in wood for 10 months, then receives a year of bottle age prior to release. There's also an annual library release, typically five years behind the current vintage.
While the Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley isn't an estate wine, Montelena is the single largest contributor of fruit to the program. It includes between 10 and 20% Merlot, from a vineyard in Oak Knoll, and spends 16 months in 20 - 30% new French oak. In contrast, the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon comes entirely from the estate's vineyards in Calistoga. It spends 22 - 26 months in barrel, then another 18 months in bottle prior to release. Fortunately, for consumers new to collecting, or restaurateurs who haven't stockpiled old vintages, there is a library release program for the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon as well.
Winemaker Matt Crafton showed me the current and library releases before finally offering to pour the yet-to-be-released 2019 Estate Cabernet and a sample of the 2021 Estate Cabernet that he had blended earlier from several barrels. Both vintages are certainly wines to look forward to, with the unfortunate reminder that there are no 2020 reds here.

For more than four decades, the Barrett family has been making wine at Chateau Montelena, with credit for wines that combine intensity and power with a luscious, rich texture - wines that express the unique characteristics of the land they come from, rather than techniques. From the basement.
The rise of Chateau Montelena mainly came after Steven Spurrier staged a blind wine tasting in 1976. The best French whites from Burgundy and reds from Bordeaux were compared to the best the US had to offer at the time in Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. And guess what: the Nappa Valley houses from the USA won in both categories. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars with red and with white, Montelena. You will understand that the wine world shook to its foundations, and American (read: Napa Valley) winemakers were really on the map for the first time. The most amusing way to get to know the whole story – if you haven't already – is to watch the movie Bottle Shock (starring the brilliant and very early deceased Alan Rickman as Steven Spurrier).
Speaking of history, Chateau Montelena Winery was initially called A.L. Tubbs winery, after the founder. This successful businessman and senator from San Francisco dreamed of making world-class California wines in Napa Valley. He found the ideal spot a few miles north of Calistoga, at the foot of Mount Saint Helena. The chateau – indeed, without the accent on the a, because American – dates from 1888. Unlike other wineries built during this period, the construction was not made of wood but stone. The style of an English castle has thick walls to keep out the heat and cold. Also – unique for that time – built into a hill to better control temperature changes. Important for quality wine.
However, Tubbs himself didn't get that far. After Prohibition, his grandson Chapin got things going again. He harvested the vineyards, made some wine, and sold grapes to other wineries and hobby winemakers. In 1940, he christened the winery Chateau Montelena Winery, a contraction of Mount St. Helena. Things came to a standstill after his death in 1947. For decades the chateau lay abandoned. The Tubbs family sold their chateau in 1958 to Yort Wing Frank, a Hong Kong electrical engineer, and his wife Jeanie, looking for a place to enjoy their retirement. The area inspired Yort to dig a lake and create a beautiful Chinese garden. Today, Jade Lake is still one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Napa Valley, with a wealth of flora and fauna. And the wine?
The Rebellion only took on a severe face again with the arrival of Jim Barrett in the early 1970s. Under his leadership, vineyards were cleared and replanted, and the winery was equipped with a modern installation. He put together a team to oversee vineyards and winery well and did not rest until he had the best grapes in Napa. The wine was made here for the first time in 1972. The rest of the story is known
However, Montelena, with son Bo Barret at the helm, is still a celebrated family wine company that continues to persevere in quality and taste. The wines of Montelena are all unique. By Napa Valley standards, intense yet elegant wines gain in character and refinement with age. You will find the usual USA suspects: cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, and petite syrah, but also cabernet franc for red. In white, of course, the legendary chardonnay, but also sauvignon blanc (late harvest and dry) and a surprising riesling.
These award-winning and iconic bottles may not be cheap, but they are well worth the splurge. Guaranteed.
