Description
100 Parker Points "The remarkable 2022 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. It's also one of the most singular, characterful wines being produced in the region today."
This 6.4-hectare estate, situated on prime terroir and neighboring Haut-Brion, has made enormous strides in quality in recent years. The château, contemporary renovated by Patrice Pichet and winemaker Stéphande Derenoncourt, is considered by insiders to be among the finest in Pessac-Léognan.
The Les Carmes Haut-Brion has a deep garnet-purple hue and unleashes a seductive array of savory aromas—black olives, charcuterie, and Sichuan pepper—over a core of bright red currant jelly, black cherry, and cassis, plus fragrant hints of rose petals and candied tangerine peel. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and elegantly stylized, yet with a rock-solid backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins and a very good freshness, finishing long and fragrant. This is a vintage with longevity potential and should age with fantastic grace.

The remarkable 2022 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. It's also one of the most singular, characterful wines being produced in the region today. Unfurling in the glass with complex aromas of blackberries and cherries mingled with notions of exotic spices, orange zest, pencil lead, rose petals and vine smoke, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a velvety attack that segues into a layered, seamless and multidimensional mid-palate framed by rich, powdery tannins. Pure, perfumed and penetrating, this blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot is a brilliant success that caps a decade of relentless work by Guillaume Pouthier and his team that have seen Les Carmes Haut-Brion emerge as one of Bordeaux's leading estates. It checks in at a mere 13.5% alcohol, with a very healthy pH of 3.64.

This is so umami with sea urchin character that gives you sea salt and dried seaweed aromas and flavors. The integrity and richness is so impressive with an exotic character, yet it is so classic and fine in structure. 13.5% alcohol. 70% whole cluster fermentation. 40% cabernet franc, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 25% merlot. A new model for Bordeaux?

One of the real highlights of the vintage, the 2017 Les Carmes Haut-Brion possesses off the charts aromatic intensity and tremendous depth. An exotic mélange of sweet tobacco, menthol, rose petal, licorice, dried herbs and sweet dark fruit builds in a wine endowed with extraordinary beauty. Energetic and vibrant to the core, Les Carmes Haut-Brion was magnificent on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. Don't miss it.

Everything is special about this domain. It starts with the wine, which is highly sought after, but it also involves Philip Stark's incredible building. A highly innovative winemaker and a new vinification room since 2015 guarantee the vastly increased quality of this historic Chateau.
Guillaume Pouthier uses relatively many whole bunches and they undergo a long fermentation. The maturation in barrels, foeders and amphorae is also extremely long. Sometimes as long as 24 to 30 months. The Cabernet Franc character of Les Carmes Haut Brion is always evident, as is the characteristic low alcohol content. In recent years, this Chateau has been one of the top in Bordeaux.
