Winery Château Léoville Poyferré
Château Léoville Poyferré is a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien and is run by the Cuvelier family. The estate is known for its powerful, modern yet terroir-true style, with a focus on optimal ripeness, precision extraction, and careful oak integration. The vineyards are situated on deep, gravelly soils near the Gironde estuary, which contributes to structure, refinement, and longevity. Léoville Poyferré combines intensity with balance and is structurally among the top wines in Saint-Julien. More information about this winery can be found under the "Winery" tab.
Region and year 2022
The 2022 vintage in Saint-Julien was characterized by warmth and perfect phenolic ripeness. Thanks to the gravelly soils, the grapes retained freshness and structure. The result is a wine of enormous concentration, yet with clear tension and precision. The 2022 vintage is considered one of the great vintages of the past decade.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The vineyards consist primarily of deep Garonne gravel with a clay subsoil, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2022 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented by Merlot and small percentages of additional grape varieties, resulting in strength, aromatic depth, and refined structure.
Vinification and maturation
After meticulous selection, the plots are vinified separately. Maturation takes place in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which are new, providing structure, depth, and integration without overpowering the fruit. The style is powerful, yet always balanced.
Magnum size 1.5 liter
This 2022 is offered in a magnum (1.5 liter). A larger size matures more slowly and evenly, allowing the structure to develop more refinedly and the aromatic complexity to be preserved over time. For a wine with this concentration and aging potential, a magnum is a particularly suitable choice.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red. The nose is intense and layered with aromas of fresh blackcurrant, blackberry, ink, and subtle notes of graphite and pencil shavings.
The palate is full and impressively structured, with a vertical build and a core of concentrated dark fruit. The tannins are powerful yet delicately integrated, providing balance and length. The finish is exceptionally long and precise, with lingering freshness and tension.
Drinking window and development
With 99 points, the 2022 Château Léoville Poyferré ranks among the absolute top vintages. Drinkable from 2028 onwards, it clearly shows potential for further development over the next 10 to 15 years. In magnum, this wine will age even longer and more harmoniously.
Summary of professional reviews
The 2022 Léoville Poyferré is described as one of the château's finest releases in a long time. With enormous depth, a powerful structure, and impressive verticality, it combines intense black fruit with graphite-like precision and an exceptionally long finish. A wine with excellent aging potential and undeniable class.

The 2022 Léoville Poyferré has turned out very nicely, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's ripe but lively, with supple tannins and a long, vanillin-inflected finish. This year, the team began picking their Merlot comparatively early and didn't perform a saignée (tank bleed), given the natural concentration of the vintage, though it remains the most flamboyant and demonstrative of the three Léoville estates, seeing some 80% new oak with malolactic fermentation in barrique for the new barrels. It will be a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

A mind-blowing Leoville Poyferre, probably one of the best for a long time. Huge depth and structure, showing a deep matrix of fruit full of fresh blackberries and a dash of ink and lead pencil. Such verticality on the full-bodied palate with beautiful balance and a clear finish that goes on and on for more than a minute. Great potential ahead. This was tasted at the UCGB tasting and was one of the best wines of the day. Drink after 2028. It should improve in the next 10 to 15 years.

From: A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022 (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Léoville-Poyferré showed a lot of potential from barrel and it does so now in bottle. Interestingly, it bursts out of the blocks aromatically for a minute then settles down, gaining delineation and refinement. It is less full-throttle than other vintages and neatly hides the 14.24% alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety-smooth entry. There is such purity here, with fine-boned tannins and nicely judged acidity, all harmonious with a peacock's tail on the finish. Controlled from start to finish, if you are a fan of "LP," you're gonna love the 2022.

Drinking Window
2030 - 2052
From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Léoville-Poyferré is super-exotic. Dense and pliant, with striking mid-palate depth and exquisite balance, this is pure sensuality. Red cherry, apricot, blood orange, wildflowers and spices all meld together as the 2022 opens in the glass. Seamless, refined tannins extend the mid-palate and finish. The purity of the fruit is remarkable. I also find the new wood imprint—long a signature here—much less evident than in the past. Earlier picking in the Merlot today yields a wine with more red fruit tones than in the past, when Léoville-Poyferré was a darker wine. It will be interesting to see if these are long-term trends. Tasted three times. Stellar.

In the heart of the Médoc, Château Léoville Poyferré has always been one of the most prestigious wineries. There was once a single domain called Léoville that was famous throughout the region. In the course of history it has come into the possession of different families through heirs and major events. In 1865 the domain came into the hands of the bankers Baron d'Erlanger and Armand Lalande. They had to contend with setbacks, in the form of the grape aphid and mildew epidemics. Today the castle belongs to the Cuvelier family. They have invested enormously since the 1980s with extraordinary results. Today the château belongs to the top of the Saint-Julien.
