Description
Winery Château Lafleur
Château Lafleur is among the absolute top wines in Pomerol and has been in the Guinaudeau family for generations. The estate is situated on a unique plot on the higher reaches of the Pomerol plateau, with an exceptional mix of gravel and clay. Lafleur is known for its precision, low yields, and uncompromising focus on terroir expression. The wines combine power with refinement and are among the most sought-after in Bordeaux. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region and year 2022
The 2022 vintage in Pomerol was characterized by warmth, perfect ripeness, and concentrated fruit. Thanks to careful selection and Lafleur's unique terroir, the year's natural richness was combined with tension and structure. In bottle, the wine developed even more harmoniously than anticipated during the primeur period.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The vineyards are situated on a unique terroir with gravelly soils and underlying clay layers. The blend traditionally consists of Merlot complemented by Cabernet Franc, which provides depth and volume as well as aromatic refinement and length.
Vinification and maturation
The plots are vinified separately, with great attention to precision and extraction. Maturation in oak ensures further integration and balance. In 2022, the élevage added further harmony and classicism to the natural concentration and richness of the vintage.
Magnum size 1.5 liter
This 2022 Château Lafleur is offered in a magnum (1.5 liters). A larger size matures more slowly and evenly than a standard bottle, allowing tension, freshness, and aromatic complexity to develop even more refinedly. For a wine with this structure and longevity, a magnum is an ideal size for extended cellar aging.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red in color. The nose is intense and layered with aromas of mulberries, potpourri, iris, and subtle notes of blood orange and incense.
The palate is full, powerful, and multidimensional. The sweet, juicy fruit is supported by velvety tannins that provide structure and precision. The finish is long, expansive, and delicately floral with rose accents, impressively balanced and intense.
Drinking window and development
With 100 points, the 2022 Château Lafleur ranks among the very best Bordeaux wines. The optimal drinking window is between 2030 and 2060. In magnum, this wine will develop even more slowly and complexly.
Summary of professional reviews
The 2022 Château Lafleur received the maximum 100 points and is described as a Lafleur for eternity. Exotic aromas of mulberry, iris, and blood orange combine with a deep, layered structure, velvety tannins, and an exceptionally long, rose-tinted finish. Maturation has added harmony and classicism to the vintage's strength.

The 2022 Lafleur has turned out even better in bottle than I anticipated. Wafting from the glass with exotic aromas of mulberries, potpourri, iris, blood orange and incense, it's full-bodied, dense and layered, with a deep and multidimensional core of sweet, succulent fruit underpinned by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, expansive, rose-inflected finish. Élevage has brought a sense of harmony and classicism to the volume and richness that were already apparent en primeur, delivering a Lafleur for the ages.

A very tight yet energetic Lafleur showing brambleberries, black olives, leather, lavender and orange peel. It's very primary with perfectly ripe grape character, particularly cabernet franc. Medium- to full-bodied, this has solid density, powerful intensity and totally resolved tannins. Rather weightless. What a wine. The new 1950? This needs time, at least until after 2030, to reveal its true greatness.

From: A Woman’s Touch: Lafleur 1985-2022 (Sep 2025)
The 2022 Lafleur is a deeply impressive wine that is obviously in its primal stage. Very pure on the multi-faceted nose with layers of black fruit, graphite and truffle oil, it turns on its heel after 20 minutes to deliver more floral and violet scents. The palate is very harmonious with gentle grip but you can sure feel its weight in the mouth. The 2022 has a sense of completeness that will serve it well for long-term ageing. Outstanding. Tasted from ex-château magnum at Kate & Kon's 40-Year vertical in Austria.

From: A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022 (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Lafleur was a deeply impressive Pomerol when tasted from barrel. As Baptiste Guinaudeau mentioned, the 2022 vintage was driven by energy and not dominated by the sun, which differentiates it from the 2019 or 2020. The 2022 possesses incredible purity on the nose, with layers of black fruit, graphite and just a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied and quite linear in style, with firm tannins, strong pencil box notes and a sharp and precise finish. It lingers temptingly in the mouth, yet at the same time you know this will need many years to reach its peak. Awesome.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Lafleur is a wild, exotic wine. Totally mind-bending, Lafleur completely defies any of the conventional definitions of Pomerol. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. Red plum, blood orange, espresso, rose petal, crushed rocks and spice all soar out of the glass. The Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) is so expressive here. Even with all of its intensity, the 2022 remains light on its feet. There is simply no other wine like Lafleur on the Right Bank. Magnificent.

Château Lafleur is a highly regarded wine producer based in Pomerol, Bordeaux. It is known for producing some of the most sought-after and prestigious wines in the world. The estate is known for its production of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a history dating back to the 19th century.
History of Château Lafleur
The history of Château Lafleur dates back to the 18th century. The estate has its origins in the 1870s, when it was founded by the Greloud family. The estate was relatively small in size and the Grelouds began to build a reputation for producing high quality wine. In the early 1940s, Château Lafleur was purchased by Jacques Guinaudeau and has remained in the hands of the Guinaudeau family ever since. This marked a new era for the estate, as the Guinaudeau family continued to improve the quality and reputation of Château Lafleur's wines. In more recent times, Château Lafleur has gained even more recognition and fame for its wines. The family is committed to preserving the estate's traditional viticulture, while also applying modern techniques to ensure the quality of their wines. Originally it was part of the larger Fleur-Blanche estate. At the end of the 18th century, the estate was divided into what are now known as Château Lafleur and Château Petrus, two of the most renowned estates in Pomerol.
Production of Château Lafleur
Château Lafleur is located in the Pomerol appellation on the right bank of the Gironde River, known for producing some of the world's most elegant and refined wines. The Pomerol appellation is known for its Merlot-based wines, and Château Lafleur is no exception. The vineyards of Château Lafleur are relatively small, covering just over 4 hectares. They are planted with approximately 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, which makes it unique in the sense that Cabernet Franc plays an equal role alongside Merlot in its blends. The winemaking process at Château Lafleur is meticulous and traditional. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand to ensure that only the best fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in small oak barrels and the wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a high percentage of new oak, to improve their structure and complexity. Château Lafleur is known for its red wines for their complexity, elegance and aging potential. The estate produces two main wines called Château Lafleur and Les Pensées de Lafleur. The primary wine, Château Lafleur, is one of the most sought-after and rarest wines in the world. The second wine, Les Pensées de Lafleur, is made from younger vines and is more accessible at a younger age.
