Impressive magnum-sized Pomerol with finesse, depth, and a remarkably refined structure.
Winery
Château L'Evangile belongs to the absolute top of Pomerol and is situated in a unique location between Pétrus and Cheval Blanc. The estate is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild and has made a clear leap in quality in recent years. They work with a strong focus on terroir, precision, and increasingly refined vinification. The style has evolved towards greater balance and elegance, with less emphasis on oak and more on fruit and structure. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
L'Evangile is situated in the heart of Pomerol, on clay and gravel soils that provide power and finesse. The vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and an ideal location, with plots that are partly east-facing. This exposure plays an important role in warm years such as 2022, as the grapes are less exposed to the hottest midday sun. The terroir yields wines with depth, velvety tannins, and distinct minerality.
Grapes and vineyard management
The blend consists of 82% Merlot, 17.5% Cabernet Franc, and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are relatively young but are managed with great precision. In 2022, the harvest was early and precise, with certain plots deliberately brought in earlier to preserve freshness and balance. This approach resulted in grapes ripe without being overripe, which was crucial in this warm year.
Vinification and aging
After manual harvesting, the grapes are carefully selected and fermented with attention to preserving fruit and structure. Vinification focuses on extraction with finesse, while the tannins remain soft and integrated. Aging takes place in oak barrels, but with a distinctly more restrained use of wood than in the past. During this phase, the wine also undergoes sur lie aging, which contributes to a creamy texture and added depth without overpowering the fruit.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep ruby red color. On the nose, refined aromas of raspberry, violets, and black truffle emerge, complemented by subtle notes of smoke and wet earth. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a silky and velvety texture. The tannins are fine and powdery, providing an elegant grip. The core of the fruit is bright and precise, with a long, balanced finish.
Style and character
This 2022 shows a clear evolution in L'Evangile's style. Less emphasis on oak and more focus on terroir and fruit. The wine is refined, supple, and perfectly balanced, with a modern interpretation of Pomerol centered on precision and elegance. At the same time, it retains sufficient depth and structure to age well.
Volume
The 2022 vintage in Bordeaux was characterized by warm and dry conditions, resulting in ripe and concentrated wines. At L'Evangile, this was excellently compensated for by precise harvest timing and smart vineyard choices. The result is a wine with ripe fruit, but also freshness and structure. This combination makes the wine impressive even now and gives it great aging potential.
Food and wine pairings
This wine calls for refined dishes with depth. Think of beef, lamb, or game, possibly with truffle or mushrooms. This Pomerol also comes into its own perfectly with classic French dishes with rich sauces. Its structure and elegance make it suitable for gastronomic pairings.

Given the young average age of this estate's vineyards, its well-draining soils and the extreme vintage, I was a little apprehensive; but the technical team evidently took the conditions in their stride, harvesting the east-facing side of the vines (which sees the hottest afternoon sun) four days earlier. The resulting 2022 L'Evangile is beautiful, offering up aromas of raspberries, vine smoke, black truffles, violets and gravely soil. Medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, it's seamless and polished, with a bright core of fruit and powdery tannins that temper 2022's inherent sweetness of fruit to sophisticated effect. At this early stage, it appears that the estate's progress with regards to élevage continues too, as Evangile's creamy oak signature is much released, allowing the fruit—and this superb terroir—to take center stage. It's a blend of 82% Merlot, 17.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fresh, wonderfully refined and gorgeously polished and long, with very fine tannins. Medium to full body. Crunchy fruit and chocolate, hazelnut and spice. Exciting to see how this tensioned beauty will evolve. Wonderful clarity.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 L'Évangile is stellar. Soft, racy and succulent to the core, L'Évangile is a major success for the vintage, not only because of the challenges of the year but because L'Évangile is a very young vineyard that was therefore especially vulnerable. Supple contours wrap around a core of black cherry, plum, chocolate and new leather. Harvest started on August 29, ahead of a heat wave that was forecast for early September. When I taste the 2022, what I mostly think about is what wines this site will produce when the vines are older.

Chateau l'Évangile is a Bordeaux house located on the very famous Pomerol plateau. The winery owned one of the first vineyards of the Pomerol. The Château L'Évangile estate was founded by the Léglise family from Libourne. They were actively involved in the construction of the vineyards of Pomerol in the middle of the 18th century. L'Évangile appeared in the 1741 register under the name of Fazilleau.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate was already close to its current state, with an area of about 13 hectares, when it was sold to a lawyer named Isambert. This lawyer named the estate "L'Évangile". The estate was purchased in 1862 by Paul Chaperon. His descendants, the Ducasse family, remained the owners of the estate until 1990. Paul Chaperon continued to build the estate's reputation and built the residence of L'Évangile in the style of the Second Empire. In the second edition of Cocks Féret in 1868, L'Évangile is listed as a "Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol".
After the death of Paul Chaperon in 1900, the estate was run by his descendants. In 1957, Louis Ducasse took over the estate, which had fallen into disrepair at the time and was also damaged by the frost in 1956. He managed to replant the vineyard and eventually restore it to its former glory. In 1982, his widow Simone Ducasse continued to manage the estate.
In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired the L'Évangile estate from the Ducasse family. They wanted to ensure that the property was maintained to the same high standards as DBR's. The initial influence of DBR (Lafite) included a more refined selection of the Grand Vin and the creation of Blason de L'Évangile as a second wine. Much work was also done to improve the vineyard with a restoration and (partial) renewal plan launched in 1998. The complete renovation of the barrel room and cellar, which was completed in 2004, completed the new state of the property.
The vintages from 1995 to 2005 were a very remarkable decade and crowned the successful work. The vintages 1995, 1996, 2000 and especially 2005 were judged to be truly exceptional!
Chateau l'Évangile has a vinification method where tradition and modern techniques go hand in hand. In 2004, the barrel room and cellars were completely rebuilt to make them more suitable for plot selection. The grapes from each plot are kept separate in batches in order to assess their potential for use in the Grand Vin at the end of fermentation. Traditional and modern winemaking methods are closely linked in all activities of the winery. The fermentation in barrels is carried out using the traditional method of pumping over and controlled maceration, with frequent tasting. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
A strict selection is carried out in the production of Château L'Évangile and the second wine, Blason de L'Évangile. The average production of Château L'Évangile and its second wine Blason de L'Évangile is 5,000 cases.
