Description
Domaine Alvina Pernot and the family history
Alvina Pernot comes from a Burgundian winemaking family and draws on generations of expertise. Based in Puligny-Montrachet, she works with a clear vision: Chardonnay with clarity, nuance, and a pure expression of its origins. The estate manages plots in prominent villages such as Puligny and Meursault. The wines are known for elegance, finesse, and balance, with vinification focused on minimal intervention and maximum precision.
Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes and the terroir
Les Charmes is one of Meursault's most prized Premier Cru vineyards. The slopes consist of calcareous clay with numerous rock inclusions and excellent drainage. This exposure provides abundant morning sun while the nights remain relatively cool. This produces grapes with ripe aromas and retained acidity. The typical profile of Les Charmes combines Meursault roundness with a mineral core and a refined, saline finish.
Vineyard management and harvest
The plots are tended by hand, with careful attention to soil life and biodiversity. Leaf wall management and targeted green harvesting keep yields low and concentration high. Harvesting is done entirely by hand into small crates, at the precise moment when tension and ripeness are in balance. This approach provides a pure, clean base for precise fermentation.
Vinification and maturation 2022
The 2022 Les Charmes is made from 100 percent Chardonnay. After a gentle pneumatic pressing, a short settling period follows, followed by fermentation with a preference for indigenous yeasts. Maturation takes place in oak barrels with a modest proportion of new wood, ensuring the focus remains on fruit and terroir. A few additional months of rest on the fine lees provide texture and subtlety without losing its fresh profile. The result is a Meursault with depth, precision, and harmonious wood integration.
Tasting note
Pale gold in the glass. The nose opens with white flowers, lemon zest, and ripe pear, followed by almond, light brioche, and wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky attack and juicy white stone fruit. The tension comes from a bright acidity and a fine, chalky minerality. The oak is subtle, the structure refined, and the finish long, clean, and slightly salty. A Les Charmes that is both round and straightforward, with plenty of energy and precision.
2022 vintage in Meursault
The 2022 vintage produced ripe grapes with remarkable aromatic purity. Thanks to careful harvesting and restrained barrel aging, the wine remains vibrant and focused. It's a vintage that immediately offers plenty of charm, yet has enough backbone to develop beautifully for several years.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Pucelles opens in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and saline, it's a touch more textural and enveloping than the Caillerets, though it remains one of the finer-boned, leaner cuvées in the range.
Alvina Pernot was awaiting the imminent birth of her latest child when I visited, so I tasted this year with her husband Philippe at their new winery on Puligny's Rue de Bois, a facility that will give them all the space they need to master the élevage and, increasingly, the pressing of the fruit that produces their wines. Readers will recall that, after working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine Paul Pernot, Alvina and Philippe had set up a tiny domaine & maison in Puligny-Montrachet. All of their 2018 vintage was produced from Alvina's share of the Pernot family holdings, but only the Puligny-Montrachet La Rue Aux Vaches was harvested and pressed (vertically) in house, as the rest of the cuvées come from Domaine Paul Pernot in must; that held true in 2019 too, though the range was supplemented by several new appellations, the result of exchanges with other growers. In 2020, this label's most successful vintage to date, La Rue Aux Vaches is joined by another Puligny lieu-dit cuvée that's pressed in house, the Clos des Noyers Brets. Within the Pernot holdings, Alvina and her husband favor earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels, but it's these cuvées that are harvested and pressed in house that really give the measure of what we can expect in the years to come. Readers will note that all the wines are bottled under high-quality natural cork.

From: Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos des Folatières 1er Cru, which comes from Alvina's family, possesses one of the most satisfying and complex bouquets amongst their six Puligny wines: green apple, Golden Delicious, Mirabelle, crushed stone, and just a touch of persimmon. The palate is very well-balanced with beautifully integrated oak. Vibrant and slightly flinty on the finish, this feels long in the mouth. Classy.

I met Philippe Abadie, Alvina Pernot’s husband, over the weekend. When I visited last year, their winery on the fringe of Puligny was still under construction. Now, it is completed with all the mod-cons: swish tasting room, electric car charger outside and clean as a whistle. These have been very impressive wines since I first tasted the 2020s, and the 2022s have expanded the line-up to around 20 cuvées. “Around 80% of the production is from Alvina’s family and 20% exchange of musts with friends,” he tells me. “Two are in Saint-Aubin. In 2020, we made a Meursault Charmes, and now we have Les Perrières. We began the harvest on August 28. We don’t use a lot of new oak, but a lot of one to four-year-old barrels, with quite a short aging period of 11 and 12 months. Sometimes, we would love to age a few months more, especially for the Grands Crus, but we don’t have the space. Then again, we don’t use a lot of new oak, and we want to see the terroir in our wines. The 2022 vintage was the largest ever at 30,000 bottles; honestly, we are at the limit for two people working at the winery. Everything was bottled just before the harvest. We will begin taking back some red parcels in the future from Alvina’s father. From 2023, we will stop the Saint-Romain due to space restrictions as we will have a Champs Gain, and our focus is upon Puligny Premier Crus.” You should definitely look out for this recent addition to the Puligny. At the entry-level end, seek out their 2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Les Femelottes or Puligny-Montrachet Clos des Noyers Bret. Up the scale, the Meursaults from Les Perrières and Poruzots. The Pulignys from Les Caillerets and Les Pucelles are enchanting, precise and focused with saline finishes. If you can find it, the 2022 Chevaliers-Montrachet is fabulous, though the Bâtard-Montrachet is nipping at its ankles.
