Description
Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet are located in the middle of the four villages that make up the part of the Côte de Beaune region known as the Côte des Blancs (Meursault, Blagny, Chassagne and Puligny). This area was given this name because of the quality and royalty of its white wines. Bâtard-Montrachet is located at the point where the villages of Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet meet. It borders directly below that of Montrachet. It is exposed to the sun from the east and lies on a terroir consisting of chalky soil. It is also the largest of the five Grands Crus.
The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine Alvina Pernot is an exceptional white wine that reflects the complexity and depth of the Bâtard-Montrachet terroir. Made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, this wine offers a rich and full mouthfeel with flavors of ripe apple, butter and cream, complemented by a mineral touch. The nose reveals aromas of citrus, lime and orange peel, which contribute to the complexity of the wine.
The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has received rave reviews, including 95 points from Decanter, who describe the wine as “a superb Bâtard” with a rich, full body and flavours of butter and cream, along with a mineral note.

The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has turned out especially well, offering up aromas of pear, orange oil, white flowers and buttered toast, followed by a full-bodied, rich and satiny palate that's textural but vibrant, underpinned by lively acids and chalky structuring extract. Concluding with a saline finish, it will merit some bottle age.
Alvina Pernot was awaiting the imminent birth of her latest child when I visited, so I tasted this year with her husband Philippe at their new winery on Puligny's Rue de Bois, a facility that will give them all the space they need to master the élevage and, increasingly, the pressing of the fruit that produces their wines. Readers will recall that, after working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine Paul Pernot, Alvina and Philippe had set up a tiny domaine & maison in Puligny-Montrachet. All of their 2018 vintage was produced from Alvina's share of the Pernot family holdings, but only the Puligny-Montrachet La Rue Aux Vaches was harvested and pressed (vertically) in house, as the rest of the cuvées come from Domaine Paul Pernot in must; that held true in 2019 too, though the range was supplemented by several new appellations, the result of exchanges with other growers. In 2020, this label's most successful vintage to date, La Rue Aux Vaches is joined by another Puligny lieu-dit cuvée that's pressed in house, the Clos des Noyers Brets. Within the Pernot holdings, Alvina and her husband favor earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels, but it's these cuvées that are harvested and pressed in house that really give the measure of what we can expect in the years to come. Readers will note that all the wines are bottled under high-quality natural cork.

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a more complex and engaging bouquet compared to the Bienvenues, with scents of citrus peel, lime and orange pith, a little more mineralité although it seems less intense than the Les Pucelles. The palate is very well balanced with flecks of white chocolate on the entry; the taut acidity keeps the tension dialed up throughout. There are lovely spicy notes, stem ginger and lemongrass on the finish that shows quite a bit of extract that lends complexity and length. Excellent.

“We just have a few Premier Crus,” Philippe Abadie, husband of Alvina Pernot, tells me as I survey the depleted line-up of nine cuvées. This is a producer I introduced in last year’s report, and like 12 months ago, they graciously permit a Sunday visit, thereby affording time to have a quick scout around the brand new winery that was a building site last year. I could admire the chichi black-painted walls and a comfortable tasting room with a tasteful arboreal mural. “We lost 100% in Chalumeaux and Clos des Folatières because of the frost,” Abadie continues, “There are usually 60 barrels of the Folatières, but there were just nine. We tried to use candles in the Village and Premier Cru, but Folatières is just too steep. Nevertheless, we have started to separate the Bourgogne Côte d’Or, one from around the winery [Rue de Bois] and the other, Les Femelottes. We started the picking on 20 September, which was difficult as there were hardly any bunches, plus there was rot that needed sorting. We used a vertical press for the parcels that we work ourselves, which is better for pressing small volumes. We are satisfied with the quality here. The bottling was done at the end of September.”
This is an impressive set of wines that don’t follow the Burgundy hierarchy. The two outstanding cuvées are the riveting Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles and a superb Village from Clos des Noyers Bret that both dare to outshine their Corton-Charlemagne and Bienvenues. Quantities are very small, but rest assured that I will have over 20 cuvées to taste through next year. Maybe I will need another quiet Sunday morning.
