Description
Susana Balbo is one of Argentina's leading and most innovative winemakers. In 1981, Susana graduated as the first female oenologist in Argentine wine history. She then worked for 25 years for various large wine estates as a winemaker. She is seen as the 'Evita Péron' of Argentine viticulture. Influential, beloved and a bit controversial. Under her motto 'where there is a will, there is a wine' she creates her path to her ultimate dream: her own winery where she can go wild with her ideas about making sublime wines. In 1999 she started her own wine estate Dominio del Plato in the heart of the Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza. The winery is situated breathtakingly against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. In 2016, the name was changed to Susana Balbo Wines.
The Susana Balbo BenMarco Malbec is produced with grapes from Los Chacayes from the Uco Valley. Los Chacayes is one of the warmest appellations in the Uco Valley but has a silty loam soil of alluvial origin with a high proportion of gravel with very good drainage. This Terroir is reflected in the BenMarco Malbec and is translated into purity of fruit with clear acidity, firm tannins and good length.
In the glass, the Ben Marco has a deep purple-red color with exuberant aromas of ripe dark fruit, wild herbs, vanilla and roasted coffee beans. The taste is full, intense and quite spicy. It has notes of aromas of flowers and black and red fruits with some spicy and roasted notes, which appear aromatic and expressive. It has a juicy taste with freshness and a very tasty and expressive aftertaste.

You can say that Susana Balbo Wines has an unusual history. The woman behind this winery actually wanted to study nuclear medicine, but her parents did not allow her to leave Mendoza. Then she surrendered to the family culture: viticulture. She was the first woman in Argentina to become an oenologist and, once a winemaker, the first Argentine woman to be hired for advice by international wineries. In 1999 she started her own winery in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. Her son and daughter also work in the family business. Located at the foot of the Andes mountains, the vineyards benefit from the pure meltwater that flows down in spring and summer. When making her wines, Susana combines the knowledge of the terroir with winemaking techniques. The art of blending, she says, is the way of expressing a winemaker's top talent. The play of aromas and flavors from the different terroirs resembles the color palette used by a painter.
