Description
Susana Balbo is one of Argentina's leading and most innovative winemakers. In 1981, Susana graduated as the first female oenologist in Argentine wine history. She subsequently worked as a winemaker for various major wineries for 25 years. She is often considered the "Evita Perón" of Argentine viticulture. Influential, beloved, and a touch controversial. True to her motto, "Where there's a will, there's a wine," she forged her path to her ultimate dream: her own winery where she could fully express her ideas for crafting sublime wines. In 1999, she established her own winery, Dominio del Plato, in the heart of the Lujan de Cuyo region of Mendoza. The winery boasts a breathtaking setting against the breathtaking backdrop of the Andes Mountains. In 2016, the name was changed to Susana Balbo Wines.
The Brioso is part of Susana Balbo's Signature series and is therefore one of her finest and most special wines. The full name of the Brioso is SUSANA BALBO WINES AGRELO LUJÁN DE CUYO BRIOSO SINGLE VINEYARD, and this classic Single Vineyard Agrelo is a blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Malbec, 22% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, matured together in brand-new French oak barrels for 15 months. It is spicy, zesty, and has notes of berries and some spicy oak without being overpowering. There is ripeness but not excess, and a very good freshness. There are some roasted flavors (coffee, dark chocolate) on the finish. It has a range of layered flavors, including dark chocolate, tobacco, and cedar, leading to a long finish.

Originating from vines in Agrelo planted to 8,000 vines per hectare, the 2021 Brioso leads with vivid, delineated aromas of dark fruits, gravel dust, sweet tobacco and dried herbs with a remarkably integrated undercurrent of new oak. The palate is rich, soft and refined, concluding with a long, layered, harmonious finish defined by understated power, fine-grained tannins and an elegantly creamy core. A beautiful balance of classical proportions and contemporary polish, I suspect this will perform beautifully in the cellar over the next 10 years. It's composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 18% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot.
Susana Balbo's wines wonderfully reflect their creator's personality: confident, lively, elegant and singular. With assistance from her son, José Lovaglio, and renowned viticulturist Edy del Popolo, the team produces an impressive range of bottlings that center around their 70 hectares of estate vines, divided between their Luján de Cuyo home base in Agrelo and Uco Valley sites spanning Altamira, Los Chacayes and Gualtallary. While the centerpiece is the fabulous Nosotros Malbec, the lineup is populated with a high percentage of white wines, which include a spectacular trio of Torrontés bottlings that are definitive reference points for the variety.

A spicy blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 23% malbec, 18% cabernet franc and 9% petit verdot. Vibrant red cherries, plums and bay leaves with a savory, spicy edge. Broad and juicy on the palate with fine-grained tannins and a textured center-palate. Long, subtle finish. Drinkable now, but better in two or three years.

From: Argentina: Making It Work with Resilience and Stylistic Ingenuity (Nov 2022)
The 2020 Signature Brioso is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo and spent 14 months in French barrels. A dark garnet in the glass. The intricate nose offers herbs, ripe fruit and hints of plum, pepper and redcurrant with a whiff of mint. Creamy and expressive in the mouth with an expansive flow, good grip and juice, this is a classical, intense red with a prolix finish.

You can say that Susana Balbo Wines has an unusual history. The woman behind this winery actually wanted to study nuclear medicine, but her parents did not allow her to leave Mendoza. Then she surrendered to the family culture: viticulture. She was the first woman in Argentina to become an oenologist and, once a winemaker, the first Argentine woman to be hired for advice by international wineries. In 1999 she started her own winery in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. Her son and daughter also work in the family business. Located at the foot of the Andes mountains, the vineyards benefit from the pure meltwater that flows down in spring and summer. When making her wines, Susana combines the knowledge of the terroir with winemaking techniques. The art of blending, she says, is the way of expressing a winemaker's top talent. The play of aromas and flavors from the different terroirs resembles the color palette used by a painter.
