Description
Escabeces is a relatively new project by René Barbier and Sara Perez (Clos Martinet, Clos Mogador, Venus la Universal) and comes from the DO of Tarragona. A few years ago, a farmer acquaintance approached René and asked if he was interested in making wine from a small plot of the 65-year-old Cartoixà Vermell, the very rare Catalan grape also called the red Xarel.lo. The trick with this wine is that although it presents itself as a rosé, it is made as a red wine and is therefore in fact a red wine - the grape simply does not have more pigment and the rose we see is the maximum color of this Red wine. Some also present it as an Orange wine, but that is technically wrong because that is a wine made from a white grape in which the skin ferments and the Cartoixà Vermell is really a red grape.
However, the Cartoixà Vermell never develops a huge amount of pigment, so even with a long maceration of the skins the wine only acquires a copper-pink color and therefore it looks like a rosé, but it is actually a red wine because the grapes and the skins, with the healthy flavonoids , participate in fermentation. The grapes are harvested in early October at around 12 degrees potential alcohol. From there they go to the winery, where the must ferments on the skins in ceramic containers for three weeks to a month. It is then pressed to mature for a further 6 months in ceramic containers and the remainder of its 18-month maturation in neutral barrels. We only received the 2021 at the beginning of 2023 and it is a wine that will become even more complex with some years. The wine is made in very small quantities and is not actually available outside Spain, but since we are the importer of the wines of Rene Barbier (and Sara Perez), we always receive a number of boxes of this wine, which only contain around 4,000 bottles. are made from it and when the wine is released, 90% goes directly to the catering industry because this Cartoixà Vermell or Xarel.lo-Vermell Escabeces is certainly gastronomic.

The bright orange rosé 2019 Escabeces was produced with a gris/rosé version of Xarello, called Xarello Vermell. They started this project five years ago with skin contact but also started using some destemmed grapes. In 2019, they did 40% of the grapes destemmed and pressed, 20% with full clusters and skin contact and 20% of the bunches directly pressed. In 2020, they did everything with skins. This follows the line of the 2017, a wine without fruit, a little closed and more on the reductive side; it has aromas and flavors of botanicals (herbs, spices...) and is austere and spicy, very tasty, almost salty. A wine for food. 4,700 bottles produced.
This is a project in the Tarragona appellation from René Barbier and some friends to make a Mediterranean rosé with some skin maceration with a pink grape variety. They are recovering the Xarello Vermell variety that is lost in the Cava base wines, finding some old vineyards in the zone of the village of Vilabella.

René Barbier (fourth generation of the same name !!!) started in the world of wine in 1992 at Clos Mogador with his father, the other René Barbier, the bearded and dedicated more than 20 years of his life to wine there. The first 10 years he worked mainly in the winery and then mainly in the vineyards and learned that unique land brings unique wines. This has now been proven with the iconic Clos Mogador, Venus Universal and Espectacle wines. In 2001 Rene Barbier had the opportunity to buy a small very old "coster" (steep sloping, traditional) vineyard called Els Bellvisos. This vineyard was abandoned and it was fascinating, in the middle of a steep quarry of holm oaks, the views and the absolute inhospitability are spectacular. It was during this same period that another major influence came into Rene's life in the form of Sara Pérez, his current wife and partner. The daughter of José Luis Pérez, one of the most important figures in the Spanish wine world.
Together with Sara they have brought the Bellvisos vineyard back into production. It was an uncompromising place, but one that offered the chance to make a wine that was one with nature. They started this project based on their philosophy of life: a sustainable, organic project where they could close the circle of life. This fascinating place known as Bellvisos (Bella Vista - Beautiful View) is an extremely steep "coster" or sloping vineyard which, due to the structure of the Llicorella or slate soil, makes it impossible to build vineyard terraces. It was abandoned 40 years before herbicides and chemical pesticides were available so was already completely original organic and biological. There are no neighbors because of the steep slopes around it: not even the bravest would plant a vineyard here! As a result, the area has been in perfect balance for a long time.
Ten years ago they started pruning and the abandoned vines at Bellvisos were brought back into production. They use a mule and hand plowing alternated with cutting the weeds. We apply herbal tea and milk whey as fertilizer and constantly walk through the vines. All manual and aimed at maintaining balance between the freshness of the plot and the depth that is typical Priorat (that which makes the wines so unique). We decide when to harvest based on our taste buds and our intuition… according to a very personal criterion. We prepare each wine in the vineyard by reproducing the wild yeasts ourselves that will lead to a natural alcoholic fermentation, preserving the different aromas according to each vintage.
The Bellvisos and the Partida del Pedrer wines come from this great unique, authentic vineyard in the heart of the Priorat.
