Description
When René Barbier brought the abandoned, very old "coster" (steeply sloping traditional Priorat vineyard) back into production, they thought they had acquired a plot of Carinyena (Carignan)... but to their great surprise, they discovered that 40% of the plot consisted of Garnatxa Peluda (indigenous Grenache). This grape ripens before Carinyena (Carignan) and adds more freshness. It was a coincidence, and a stroke of luck, because it was the final piece of the puzzle needed to bring the Bellvisos balance.
The Partida Pedrer vineyard belongs to the Bellvisos vineyard, but this north-facing area allows the winemaker to harvest the shaded freshness and sun-drenched morning warmth. With slightly less direct sunlight in a warm climate, this produces very elegant wines. The young plantation of Grenache and Cariñena (a very rare Priorat variety) naturally creates complex red and rosé wines.
The Partida Pedrera (100% Grenache), produced by this talented couple, is an exceptional wine with a fresh minerality derived from the slate. The grapes are foot-pressed and slowly fermented in oak barrels. The Partida Pedrera Priorat is fermented with natural yeasts on the grapes for approximately 20 days, followed by a 10-day post-alcoholic maceration. Fermentation and aging take place in amphora. This magnificent Partida Pedrera Priorat has a deep garnet color with floral notes and ripe fruit, blackcurrant, and a touch of spice on the nose. On the palate, the wine has a velvety texture, fruity notes, and mineral and supple tannins. On the palate, it is a true explosion of fruit, with a remarkably persistent flavor. This 2021 vintage marks the first time that 100% aging takes place in 220- and 300-liter ceramic vats to preserve the wine's longevity and purity of expression and terroir. Pedrer is a natural wine, made with red Grenache and without added sulfites (vin naturale). The purity of this wine is unparalleled. No artificiality, just pure and simple. Enjoy it with pork tenderloin and porcini mushrooms, quail stuffed with foie gras, rabbit stew, or roasted guinea fowl.

The 2022 Partida Pedrer Negre is from llicorella schist soils and a growing season with abundant heat waves that accelerated everything. They had to harvest quickly, do some dry carbonic macerations and a gentler vinification, trying to rescue the balance in the grapes, compensating the heat. The wine has a pale cloudy ruby color, and the nose is super expressive, with a sensation of wilderness and freedom, with some meaty and earthy qualities. The wine has energy and power but with a gentler twist in the palate, and the alcohol is really integrated (it's 14.5%, but you don't feel it). It has fine tannins from the Garnacha and a very sapid finish.
I tasted a variety of vintages from the personal project of Sara Pérez and René Barbier, as some wines are kept and released later, mostly the ones produced with Cariñena. The white 2021 was the highlight of the tasting. The wines have been produced at Clos Mogador, a kind of experimentation field for René. René was on a three-week tour in the US, meeting customers that were all really worried because of the threat of a 200% tariff on wines from Europe...

René Barbier (fourth generation of the same name !!!) started in the world of wine in 1992 at Clos Mogador with his father, the other René Barbier, the bearded and dedicated more than 20 years of his life to wine there. The first 10 years he worked mainly in the winery and then mainly in the vineyards and learned that unique land brings unique wines. This has now been proven with the iconic Clos Mogador, Venus Universal and Espectacle wines. In 2001 Rene Barbier had the opportunity to buy a small very old "coster" (steep sloping, traditional) vineyard called Els Bellvisos. This vineyard was abandoned and it was fascinating, in the middle of a steep quarry of holm oaks, the views and the absolute inhospitability are spectacular. It was during this same period that another major influence came into Rene's life in the form of Sara Pérez, his current wife and partner. The daughter of José Luis Pérez, one of the most important figures in the Spanish wine world.
Together with Sara they have brought the Bellvisos vineyard back into production. It was an uncompromising place, but one that offered the chance to make a wine that was one with nature. They started this project based on their philosophy of life: a sustainable, organic project where they could close the circle of life. This fascinating place known as Bellvisos (Bella Vista - Beautiful View) is an extremely steep "coster" or sloping vineyard which, due to the structure of the Llicorella or slate soil, makes it impossible to build vineyard terraces. It was abandoned 40 years before herbicides and chemical pesticides were available so was already completely original organic and biological. There are no neighbors because of the steep slopes around it: not even the bravest would plant a vineyard here! As a result, the area has been in perfect balance for a long time.
Ten years ago they started pruning and the abandoned vines at Bellvisos were brought back into production. They use a mule and hand plowing alternated with cutting the weeds. We apply herbal tea and milk whey as fertilizer and constantly walk through the vines. All manual and aimed at maintaining balance between the freshness of the plot and the depth that is typical Priorat (that which makes the wines so unique). We decide when to harvest based on our taste buds and our intuition… according to a very personal criterion. We prepare each wine in the vineyard by reproducing the wild yeasts ourselves that will lead to a natural alcoholic fermentation, preserving the different aromas according to each vintage.
The Bellvisos and the Partida del Pedrer wines come from this great unique, authentic vineyard in the heart of the Priorat.
