Description
Rubinelli Vajol is the new superstar. The wine is authentic and not as sweetened as they often try to do in Valpolicella. James suckling writes in his report on Valpolicella: " Rubinelli Vajol Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2019, which comes from a producer that is arguably the new superstar of the style. " and from WineMag 2023, Rubinelli Vajol gets the maximum recognition namely: Italian Winery of the year 2023
The Valpolicella Classico of Rubinelli Vajol comes from the typical grape varieties for a Valpolicella Superiore namely: 50% Corvina, 25% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella, 5% Molinara and 5% Oseleta. The Grand Cru vineyards of Rubinelli are located in the Vajol area and are among the most beautiful parts of the Veneto. In the Vajol the winery has a unique position because all the vineyards are located around the winery (this in contrast to many others (read most) who have plots in the entire area and the commercial amarone wineries often do not have their own vineyards and buy most of them.
All grapes come exclusively from the fields around Corte Sant'Anna, this gives a special uniqueness to the wine and makes it unmistakable: wine born on tuff. Once this area was the sea - imagine a sunny bay. The soil is composed of marl formed between the Mesozoic era (150 million years ago) and the Tertiary era (60 million years ago) followed by the origin of the Alpine mountain range. The soil is very calcareous, ideal for moderating the natural growth force of the vines. Limestone also has spongy properties: the capacity to retain water for long periods only letting it through when the plants need it. This keeps the grapes always well hydrated. The soil is thin but rich in organic matter which allows the vines to live in perfect nutritional balance. This harmony is reflected in the quality of the wines which are always elegant and are a complete expression, both in their aroma and on the palate, of their rich polyphenolic multitude. Rubinelli Vajol wines are born in the soil before they even reach the wine cellar; they are gifts of nature and of the formation of land structures in the Conca del Vajol.
This Valpolicella Superiore is also called a mini-amarone . The grapes are pressed in early November after drying in baskets for more than a month. Fermentation and maceration take place for 15-20 days at a controlled temperature, after which the Superiore is allowed to mature in peace for 24-36 months in oak barrels. This is a very beautiful Valpolicella Superiore with a great freshness that typifies the wines of Rubinelli (PH: 5.55). So no oversweet, heavily alcoholic wines as is so often the case, but a beautiful wine with 13.5% alcohol. The Rubinelli Valpolicella Superiore has a beautiful ruby red color. In the nose, the beautiful balance with sweet fruit and herbs is immediately noticeable. We smell black cherries, red fruits, chocolate, raisins and a hint of pepper. This is certainly a Valpolicella with a lot of character, elegance and Italian refinement. The harmonious bouquet, the fresh and dry taste make this wine a perfect companion throughout the meal and is an excellent accompaniment to roasted meat, a Risotto funghi or a Pizza.
In the TOP 100 WINES OF ITALY by James Suckling : My favorite Valpos include the Tedeschi Valpolicella Lucchine 2022, the Bertani Valpolicella Classico Le Miniere di Novare Bertani Cru 2021 and, above all, the Rubinelli Vajol Valpolicella Classico Superiore which comes from a producer that is arguably the new superstar of the style. All are examples of bright, transparent wines that will light up any table by virtue of their freshness and transparency.

Pasta with mushrooms and Parmesan
The earthy tones of fried mushrooms (such as chestnut mushrooms or oyster mushrooms) go well with the spicy and slightly floral tones of this Valpolicella. The Parmesan cheese gives extra savouriness, which keeps the wine nicely balanced.Grilled sausages with rosemary and garlic
The spicy taste of Italian sausages enhances the spiciness and fresh character of the wine. The slightly smoky grilled taste provides a pleasant complement to the soft tannin content.Lasagna with minced beef and béchamel sauce
The structure of this Valpolicella supports richer dishes such as lasagna, where the light fruity character provides balance to the creamy béchamel and the full minced meat mixture.Oven baked chicken with roasted vegetables
A simple dish where the fresh acidity in the wine pairs well with the caramelized flavors of roasted peppers, zucchini and onion. The juiciness of the chicken matches the elegant body of the wine.Ravioli filled with pumpkin and sage butter sauce
The slightly sweet filling and the buttery sauce provide a velvety texture that contrasts with the fresh acidity of the wine. The sage brings an aromatic spiciness that fits nicely with the profile of the Valpolicella.Venison fillet with a blueberry and red wine sauce
The subtle gamey flavour of the venison is given extra depth by the berry sauce, which echoes the red fruit and the structure of the wine. This is a surprising, elegant combination for a special dinner.

A spicy, peppery wine with aromas of fresh fruit such as red currants and pomegranates. Light-bodied, it shows easy-drinking style and bitter citrus flavors, yet it’s enjoyable and polished.

From: Veneto: A Constant State of Evolution (Feb 2024)
The 2020 Valpolicella Classico Superiore entices with a lovely burst of wild strawberries, violet pastille and hints of cracked chalk. This is silky and refined, with cooling acidity and polished red and blue fruits that settle in under an air of rosy inner florals. The 2020 keeps the energy high, finishing long and classically dry while maintaining fantastic freshness. I would welcome this beautifully balanced Valpolicella at my dinner table any night of the week.
