Persoonlijke gegevens
Remírez de Ganuza ranks among the elite of Rioja and is known for its extreme focus on selection and detail. The house employs a meticulous approach using only the best fruit. With the Único Viñedo (UV), the winery demonstrates the extent to which precision can be achieved: a wine sourced from a single specific plot, with a complete focus on origin and expression. You can find more information in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The grapes come from the La Rad plot, planted in 1973, located in the higher and cooler part of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. This location ensures slow ripening and the preservation of freshness. The combination of old vines and altitude produces a wine with concentration, tension, and a clear expression of the terroir.
Grapes and vineyard management
The UV is made from 100% Tempranillo. The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates and then rigorously selected in the cellar. Only perfectly ripe fruit is used, ensuring purity and precision. The low yield from old vines results in a wine of great concentration without loss of elegance.
Vinification and aging
After the harvest, the grapes are carefully destemmed but not crushed. They enter the fermentation tank by gravity, where a cold maceration of 48 hours takes place. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts and is accompanied by gentle remontage and pigeage. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and aging for 16 months in 233-liter French oak barrels, which provides structure and refinement without overpowering the fruit.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red in color. The aroma features complex notes of ripe red and black fruit, violets, spices, and subtle woody notes. On the palate, powerful yet controlled, with a beautiful balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. The structure is fine and precise, with a long finish where fruit and spiciness come together.
Style and character
This wine showcases a modern, precise style of Rioja. No excessive extraction, but a focus on balance, finesse, and length. The combination of single vineyard, old vines, and careful vinification results in a wine with depth and elegance. Moreover, with a production of only approximately 1,642 bottles, this is a very limited wine.

From: 2022, 2023 and 2024: The Rioja Renaissance (Apr 2026)
The 2024 UV Paraje de La Rad (100% Tempranillo) was aged in foudres to preserve purity and is strikingly aromatic. On the nose, violets, blood orange and lavender lead into sour cherry and fresh plum, with touches of licorice and white pepper. The palate is dry and broad, with a chalk-inflected texture, while freshness drives depth and length. A notably modern expression for the estate, centered on clarity and finesse.

Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of the wines of the Top Rioja House: Remirez de Ganuza and we are very proud of this because Remirez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute top of Spain and is also highly appreciated internationally. All their wines score well above the 90 Parker and Penin point mark with the absolute peak for the 2004 Gran Reserva which has received a whopping 100 points.
The owner of this absolute top domain is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. Obsessed with quality with an ongoing commitment to excellence in his wine, Fernando is the absolute pioneer in Innovation. At Remirez de Ganuza, even the smallest detail in the entire production chain of the wines is looked at and they are constantly optimizing. Fernado's motto is that exceptional quality can only be achieved through strict selection. His knowledge and experience with La Rioja vineyards make him one of the most appreciated winemakers in the region. The vineyards are spread over the villages of Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza and Elciego which are located in the most beautiful part of the Rioja namely the Rioja Alavesa. The bottom of the vineyards have a limestone clay composition with abundance of gravel and small round stones. Remirez de Ganuza only works with very old vines with an average age of 60 years or older. About 90% of the vines are Tempranillo, the rest of the vineyards include Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. The vineyards are 'en gobelet' but with a support on wire so that there is a larger exposure to the sun and better photosynthesis. A unique system that Fernando developed himself.
At the Remirez de Ganuza winery, the grapes undergo a strict selection, which also shows how quality-conscious but also how innovative Fernando is making absolute top wine. All grapes are harvested by hand and the grapes are first "rested" in the cooling chamber for 24 hours. First is separation from the bottom and shoulders of each cluster. Only the “los hombros” or the shoulders (the top part of the bunch of grapes) are used for his Reserva wines (Fincas de Ganuza, Remirez de Ganuza reserva and gran reserva and Trasnocho) because these are the most ripe grapes with the most sun seen.
