Description
The Paolo Manzone Barolo Meriame comes from vineyards in the Meriame cru in the comune (municipality) of Serralunga d'Alba in Barolo. Paolo Manzone owns a large portion of the vineyards in Meriame. The oldest vines are 70 years old, making them ideally suited for producing distinctive Meriame wines. He uses grapes from the oldest vines in the finest plots to create the highly praised Barolo Meriame. Incidentally, Paolo Manzone also uses only grapes from Meriame in his Barolo Serralunga d'Alba, whose vines are approximately 25 years old.
The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 350 meters and face south/southeast. The soil consists primarily of clay and limestone. The oldest vines are approximately 70 years old. Fermentation of the noble Nebbiolo grapes takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine is then aged for 24 months in oak barrels, at least 50% of which are in large Slavonian oak barrels (1,500 liters) and the remainder in French barrels (350 liters), 30% of which are new.
In the glass, the Paolo Manzone Barolo Meriame is ruby red with a nose of dark cherries, dried fruit, coffee, rose petals, tar and vanilla.
On the palate, the Meriame has a full, powerful flavor, with a beautiful balance of fruit, tannins, and oak. It pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, such as bresaola, salami, and spicy sausage. It's also delicious with beef and mushroom stew.
ABOUT MERIAME
Meriame is the Barolo cru on the rise. The popularity of the Meriame cru is relatively new. Paolo Manzone's eponymous Cascina Meriame has certainly played a role in this. Since 1999, he has been producing fine Barolos, including a 100% Meriame. Meriame forms a kind of amphitheater, protecting the vines from winter frost and summer heat. There is always a good balance between warmth and humidity. The soils from the Lequio formation are calcareous and provide strength and structure. The best parts of the Meriame cru, in the middle and upper regions, therefore produce substantial wines with an earthy character. The wines from the lower regions are more elegant in style.

Classic and complex Barolo. Potpourri, licorice, vibrant blood orange, subtle dried cherries and balsamic whiffs. Medium-bodied with velvety tannins soaked with dried flowers, refreshing acidity and a spicy aftertaste. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

"Meriame is one of the top MGAs from Serralunga and Paolo Manzone is definitely one of the best interpreters of this cru. Vanilla, face powder, blood orange and sweet violet are accompanied by a bit of sweetness on the nose. The palate is firm and relaxing, even a bit modern with a softer style – possibly from the tonneaux used here as well as large oak casks – but with extracted tannins; a bit gallic on the finish. I personally would expect a bit more from this wine in this vintage. One to revisit soon."
Wine Enthusiast
"This Barolo entices with a bouquet of crushed red fruits, dominated by vibrant raspberries and cherries, complemented by delicate wildflower notes. On the palate, the wine reveals a delightful blend of spices and well-integrated oak, harmonizing with the juicy dark berried fruit flavors. Silky tannins and lively acidity create a balanced, enjoyable experience. Drink 2025-2038."

Paolo Manzone, long-time winemaker for wine giant Giordano, has achieved his dream. He owns ten hectares of vineyard in Piedmont, 4 of which have the prestigious Barolo appellation and 6 in the Alba area. One Barolo bears the name of the sub-district of Serralunga - homeland of long-lived, fairly vigorous Barolos - and comes from 15-year-old vines. The other is a "single vineyard" or Cru: Meriame, planted 60 years ago
In the rustic Serralunga d'Alba, in the heart of the DOCG Barolo, lies the cru Meriame, where Paolo Manzone planted his Nebbiolo for his most important wines. The vineyard dates from 1948 and the vines are sometimes up to 70 years old. Manzone has been inspired by Burgundy and makes Barolos that mature in French Burgundy barrels. They are Barolos in a fairly modern style, which match the accessible and somewhat earthy style of Barolos that the cru Meriame produces. The grapes come from vineyards in the cru Meriame in the comune (municipality) of Serralunga d'Alba in Barolo. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 350 meters and face south/southeast.
