Description
“Ma Douce reminds me of a classic Bâtard-Montrachet produced by Michel Niellon in the mid-1980s.” Robert Parker
Nestled in picturesque St. Helena, in the heart of Napa Valley, you'll find Morlet Family Vineyards. They combine old world traditions with the vibrant spirit of California. Founded by Luc and Jodie Morlet, this family-owned winery is dedicated to making exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast.
The Morlets combine old world principles with the terroir of California. The winery focuses on small yields and meticulous vineyard management, ensuring that each grape is carefully hand-picked. Using low-intervention winemaking techniques, Luc and Jodie create powerful yet refined wines that showcase the personality and complexity of their fruit.
Winemaker notes: Located on the river bench of Sonoma County's Russian River Valley, this hillside vineyard benefits from ideal conditions for the Chardonnay vines. The cuttings came from the Old Wente, and the field selection is renowned for its excellent quality and richness. This concentration originates from the typical petite size of the berries. Handcrafted using classical Burgundian winemaking techniques, this wine is dedicated to our daughter, Claire Morlet.
This Chardonnay from Morlet Family Vineyards is complex and rich with a strong mineral backbone. In the nose you will find notes of lemon, apple peel and fresh herbs. The palate is full and concentrated. This wine is made to age gracefully for more than a decade, but Ma Princesse benefits from 6 months to a year of cellar rest before beginning to unfold.

About Oakville - Napa Valley
Located in the heart of the region, Oakville represents some of Napa Valley's greatest, most powerful wines. It is this part of Napa Valley that has established itself as a leading producer of cabernet sauvignon, resulting in internationally recognized, award-winning wines. With equally powerful regions surrounding Oakville, including Rutherford, Yountville and St. Helena, the Oakville AVA has managed to produce world-class wines from the unique soil and perfect heat. With a distinct combination of clay, loam and sandy soils, the Oakville region has managed to produce highly complex and structured Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Chardonnay. It is these Bordeaux varieties that have put several wineries in the international spotlight. One of these wineries is Screaming Eagle Winery, which has produced consistent expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon and was able to auction one of their vintages for $500,000. This price tag has made it one of the most expensive wines in the world. In addition to the Screaming Eagle Winery, Oakville has several other wineries throughout the region such as Harlan, Bond, Promontory and Morlet.

Assembled from barrel for this tasting, the 2021 Chardonnay Ma Princesse is a standout this vintage, being plump and succulent, with pear, melon and citrus shadings. It's medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated yet shows tremendous length and elegance on the finish.

Ripe aromas of honeysuckle, nectarine, cooked lemon, poached pear, vanilla and custard. Full-bodied with a round, creamy palate of fruit and vanilla with some coconut undertones. Flavorful and intense. Flamboyant. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.

From: The 2021 Napa Valley Cabernets, Part One (Dec 2023)
The 2021 Chardonnay Ma Princesse is racy and super-expressive right out of the gate. Lemon confit, marzipan, passionfruit and sweet spice are beautifully layered. There's lovely mid-palate oiliness and texture here, along with plenty of richness, but no excess weight. This is the most overt of Luc and Jodie Morlet's Chardonnays.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2023
I tasted a wide range of wines with Luc Morlet this year. The 2021 Pinots, all from vineyards in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, are fine examples of this superb vintage. As always, the Pinots are done with fully destemmed fruit and see about 14 months in barrel. I was even more impressed with the 2020 Napa Valley wines, all of which are superb within the context of the year. Naturally, the 2021s are on another level. These days, Luc and Jodie Morlet’s wines offer plenty of the textural richness that has become such a signature, but with a little more verve in the past. The wines can be deceptive. They are quite appealing on release, but from what I have seen so far, that does not come at the expense of the wines’ ability to age.

The 2021 Chardonnay Ma Princesse comes entirely from Old Wente clone in the Ritchie Vineyard, planted with 50-year+ vines on Goldridge and Volcanic soils. It comes bounding out with notes of pie crust, allspice, and candied lemon leading to a core of apricots, praline, and lime blossom. The medium to full-bodied palate is wonderfully silky, with a well-knit racy line cutting through the intense citrus and spicy layers, finishing with a minerally lift.

The 2021 Chardonnay Ma Princesse comes from the Ritchie Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, which is planted to the old Wente clone of Chardonnay and produces small clusters with tiny little berries. In the glass, the wine reveals notes of preserved citrus, wet stone, wildflowers, vanilla bean spice, and fresh pear. Medium to full-bodied, it’s more linear in feel, with more citrus on the palate, although it retains beautiful, fresh, floral notes through its long finish. It carries fantastic tension, concentration, and elegance, with persistent energy driving the wine. It’s phenomenal and is only going to improve with another few years in the cellar.
