Description
Luca is the private project of Laura Catena. Laura has made her mark on the wine world and is often called 'the face of Argentine wine', because she has done a lot for the country. She recently presented her 100-year plan: "I want every collector in the world to have Nicolás Catena Zapata in their cellar - that's my dream".
Another dream of Laura Catena was the foundation of Luca, named after her eldest son. With Luca she wants to make quality wines, where the perfect terroir, low yields per hectare and state-of-the-art winemaking are the key words. The vineyards of Luca are located at an altitude of 900 to 1500 meters and are among the highest in Mendoza. Here you can find old vines, which no longer produce much, but keep the quality of the vineyard (and therefore the wines) high. With this she wants to show the best expression of each grape variety. In total Luca has planted six grape varieties: Chardonnay, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Reviving the old Malbec vines of Mendoza, that is the goal of Laura Catena, founder of Luca Wines. The grapes from these vines used to disappear into bulk production, but are now getting the fame they deserve. Yields are kept low to maintain high quality. Traditional vinification takes place, followed by twelve months of wood maturation in oak barrels, 35% of which are new and the rest second-year. The wine has great ageing potential. The result is a Malbec with a deep colour, red and black fruit and a delicious spiciness. Of course delicious with Argentinian steak, but also very good to combine with semi-hard cheeses. The Malbec Old Vines is purple-red in the glass with red and black fruit on the nose, lots of herbs and hints of chocolate. In the mouth, the aroma of cherries jumps out and is accompanied by a hint of espresso in the background. The wine has a full body with a lively acidity that results in a finish that lasts.

The 2021 Old Vine Malbec is floral, aromatic, balanced, fresh and varietal with notes of violets and small berries. It has integrated oak and a tender mouthfeel with a medium body and fine tannins.
Luca is a separate project from the Catena family.

A nicely saline and concentrated malbec here with plenty of peppercorn and dark spices to the black cherries. Full-bodied but still fluid on the palate with abundant, silky tannins. Drink or hold.
