Description
The L' Aventure Estate Côte a Côte has depth and minerality. Dark cherries, black licorice, iodine, graphite, oyster shells. The L'Aventure Winery Côte a Côte is a blend of 37% Grenache, 32% Syrah and 31% Mourvedre. The palate is very classy and pure, with fine, grainy tannins, uplifting acidity and slowly opening layers of perfumed fruit that stimulate the very long finish.
French winemaker Stephan Asseo has a unique perspective on making wine in Paso Robles, having made wine in Bordeaux for 17 years before moving to California. “I moved here to have more freedom. Not to make appellation wine, but to make my own interpretation of my own terroir,” he says. “In Bordeaux, an appellation means one style of wine. I love the creativity here. In Paso, we shoot in all directions.”

A summary of James Suckling's about l'Aventure and Paso Roble
“PASO ROBLES' DOBLE: FRESH AND BALANCED"
Although Paso Robles wines often come with high alcohol, that doesn't stop producers from making fresh and balanced bottles. Leading producers such as L'Aventure […] found high-pitched balance with great intensity and phenolic ripeness that offset the heat, which is barely noticeable even with high alcohol levels.
“To achieve the maturity of polyphenols, we need to keep the fruit longer on the vines because of the cool nights here” said Stephane Asseo of L'Aventure, in Paso's Willow Creek district. “You have to put everything into context. We are in Paso, so we make Paso wines.” Asseo also stressed the importance of phenolic ripeness, saying it would be a mistake to harvest too early just for the sake of lower alcohol. “It is crucial to look at the maturity of polyphenols, not just Brix levels,” he said, referring to the measurement of sugar levels in grapes and wine. L'Aventure's Paso Robles Willow Creek District Cote a Cote 2020, a blend of 45 percent grenache, 30 percent syrah and 25 percent mourvedre, was the standout among the wineries' many blended wines and cabernet sauvignons.”

The 2021 Côte a Côte is a blend of 37% Grenache, 32% Syrah and 31% Mourvèdre that combines power and elegance, concentration and weightlessness. The glass reveals a deep well of aromas—maraschino cherry, blueberry, licorice, rooibos tea and autumn leaves emerge from the glass and are made even more complex by undertones of earth and spice. The full-bodied palate is plush, supple and generous, though its chocolaty, floral fruit is perfectly ripe. It has a foil of mouthwatering acidity, flinty accents and a long, very latent finish. It will take several years in bottle to fully unfurl.

Refined nose with cherries, cassis, ripe plums, herbs and sweet spices. It's full-bodied with creamy tannins. An elegant development on the palate with a velvety texture. The fruit is obvious at the center with a discreet touch of spices and grilled herbs on the mid-palate. Slightly chewy with a focused, flavorful developing finish. 37% grenache, 32% syrah and 31% mourvedre. Drink or hold.

From: Paso Robles 2021-2023: Far From Typical (Jul 2024)
Cool-toned and classic, the 2021 Côte a Côte opens with a lovely blend of crushed blackberries, dusty sage and a lifting hint of split pine. It's elegant and silky in feel, yet powerful all the same, with depths of ripe red and black fruits that wash across the palate with ease, all guided by brisk acidity. Gently tannic and more savory than anticipated, this leaves the mouth watering for more despite its youthful state and tension. Fantastic.

This year's visit to L'Aventure included tasting the freshly bottled 2022s and the 2021s that weren’t quite ready on my last trip. These are two very different vintages, with 2021 being a balanced year, warm but with slightly higher rainfall than average, and 2022, a drought year with a heat wave at the end of the season. The 2021s, after one year in bottle, offer a mix of power, depth and finesse. These wines could only be made in Paso by a winemaker whose heart is half in Bordeaux and half in Paso Robles. The 2022s, instead, will be released in September. Notwithstanding the challenging growing season, they provide energy and balance. Since the 2022 vintage, the Estate Cuvée has been officially renamed Estate Reserve. The Chloe, named after Stephan Asseo’s daughter, will reflect her real-life personality: more lively, equally complex, and less brooding and powerful.

Stephan Asseo, owner and winemaker at L'Aventure Winery, started making wine in 1982, after his education at L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon, Bourgogne, France. In the same year, Stephan founded Domaine de Courteillac in Bordeaux. He and his family later bought Chateau Fleur Cardinal and Chateau Robin in the Cotes de Castillion, Bordeaux. Over the next 15 years, Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker with exacting craftsmanship and gained a reputation as a "maverick winemaker". However, his true desire was to be more innovative than AOC law would allow. This led him, his wife Beatrice and his three children, including his daughter Chloé, on a 1996 search for a great terroir, where he could pursue his ideal as a winemaker. After searching for over a year among the world's greatest wine fields, ranging from South Africa to Lebanon, from Argentina to Napa, they found Paso Robles. Stephan and Beatrice instantly "fell in love" with the unique terroir of west side Paso Robles. The rolling topography of the Santa Lucia Mountains, the deep calcareous soils and the maritime influences of the famous Templeton Gap combine to create a world-class wine country, with the potential to make some of the world's finest blends. Here, in Paso Robles, Stephan and his family started their adventure "L'Aventure" in 1998.
The spirit of L'Aventure is most apparent in Stephan's "Paso Blends", such as Optimus and Estate Cuvée. Both wines are blends of Syrah / Cabernet Sauvignon / Petit Verdot. In these wines, as well as in our Rhône blend Côte à Côte, the blending of premium grape varieties increases the authenticity, complexity and balance of the wines. In this adventurous spirit we find the future of Paso Robles wines...great, well-balanced red blends.
