Winery
Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of the most respected houses in Burgundy, with a history dating back to 1880. The family business combines tradition with a modern vision and works largely organically and biodynamically. Drouhin's style focuses on finesse, balance, and a pure expression of terroir. The Marquis de Laguiche vineyard has been exclusively in the family's hands since 1947, which is unique in Burgundy. As a result, Drouhin has full control over this Premier Cru. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The Morgeot Premier Cru is located in the southern part of Chassagne-Montrachet and is known for its rich yet refined style. The Marquis de Laguiche vineyard is one of the largest Premier Cru monopoles in the appellation. The soils consist of limestone and clay, providing structure, minerality, and depth. Situated on gently sloping terrain, it ensures good drainage and optimal ripening of the grapes. The climate is continental with influences that help preserve freshness.
Grapes and vineyard management
The wine is made from 100% Chardonnay sourced from carefully selected plots within the Morgeot vineyard. The vines are of medium age, which contributes to concentration and complexity. Work is carried out according to organic and biodynamic principles, with great attention to soil structure and natural balance. The grapes are harvested by hand and strictly selected to use only the best fruit.
Vinification and aging
After the harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels. Some of these barrels are new, but the use of wood always remains in balance with the fruit. The wine then ages in the barrel for approximately 12 to 15 months. During this period, the wine undergoes sur lie aging, which provides extra texture and complexity. Regular stirring of the lees contributes to a round structure and the integration of aromas, without losing freshness.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a bright golden-yellow color. On the nose, intense aromas of lemon verbena, star fruit, and ripe pear emerge, complemented by spicy notes such as clove and a subtle hint of cedarwood. On the palate, the wine is full and precise, with a beautiful tension and fresh acidity that supports the structure. The taste develops broadly and layered, with a distinct mineral undertone. The finish is very long, with a light phenolic grip that provides extra depth.
Style and character
This Premier Cru combines power with elegance. The wine has a rich structure, yet remains refined and precise. The balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and subtle oak influence creates a classic Burgundy style with great depth. This is a wine with tension and length, which develops beautifully in the glass and in the bottle.
Volume
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was characterized by challenging conditions, with lower yields due to spring frost. This resulted in concentrated grapes with a beautiful balance between ripeness and freshness. The wines from 2021 are known for their precision, lively acidity, and classic style. This Morgeot Premier Cru clearly displays that profile, with a focus on elegance and structure. Drinkable from 2024 and with potential for further aging.
Food and wine pairings
This wine comes into its own perfectly with refined dishes. Think of lobster, scallops, or turbot with butter and citrus. This Chardonnay also pairs well with poultry in creamy sauces or dishes with mushrooms. Its structure and freshness make it versatile, suitable for both classic French cuisine and modern dishes.

From: A Vintage with Issues: Burgundy 2021 (Oct 2025)
The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot 1er Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) has a fragrant bouquet that takes time to unfold, with scents of almond and chai emerging. The palate is well balanced with a smooth entry, fine acidity, orange rind and hints of dried honey that segue into a lightly spiced finish. Very composed, if maybe just missing a bit of pizzazz, perhaps due to a little botrytis. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Joseph Drouhin was a bold and enterprising young man who hailed from the Chablis region. In 1880, at the age of 22, he settled in Beaune and founded his own wine company there. His goal was to offer high quality wines that would bear his name. His son Maurice succeeded him and set up a vineyard estate in front of the house, buying land in some excellent appellations such as Clos des Mouches and Clos de Vougeot. Robert Drouhin, who succeeded Maurice in 1957, gave the domain its current dimension and acquired many vineyards, especially in Chablis, where he was able to recognize its true potential. He was one of the first in Burgundy to introduce "culture raisonnée" (abolition of pesticides and other chemicals) and set up an oenology laboratory led by Laurence Jobard, the very first female oenologist in Burgundy. Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric are the four children of Robert and Françoise Drouhin. They uphold the values of the house and its constant search for quality, for the enjoyment of all who have a deep appreciation for the natural elegance of Burgundy.
With nearly 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating range of Burgundian terroirs in all their authenticity and subtle variations. Joseph Drouhin has adopted the organic and biodynamic approach. Only natural products are used in the vineyards and all procedures show the utmost respect for the soil, the vine and the environment. Joseph Drouhin's style is an alliance between character, balance and harmony. Wines intended to be drunk young are fresh and subtle; wines that are meant to be preserved take on a luscious complexity with age.
