Description
José Pariente verdejo is one of the best Verdejo wines from Rueda and of this Fermentado en Barrica (also known as the Verdejo Rueda do Organic 'Las Fincas de JP') only a limited number of bottles are produced annually (approx. 4000 bottles). The Fermentado en Barrica is a Verdejo fermented in oak barrels. Due to the maturation in wood, the Verdejo gets a nice combination of tones of tobacco and white flowers. The taste is medium-bodied, dry, with a good acidity and "bite". It has a good balance between fruit and wood. Deliciously fresh but with depth and complexity.
Jose Pariente, the winery founded by Victoria Pariente in 1988 is the 'instigator' of making absolute quality wines in the Rueda. This is one of its showpieces. This innovative white wine offers a revealing glimpse into the potential of the Verdejo variety, through a rigorous selection of grapes from an old vineyard and vinification in oval concrete tanks. A great wine, an unusual depth and complexity among white wines.
The grapes come from a vineyard of more than 35 years old with very low yields. Strict selection of the grapes with (very) aggressive pruning. The wine goes into egg-shaped concrete tanks, the shape of which ensures temperature differences and a natural flow. Then the wine gets a wood-aging on French oak (new and 2nd year barrels) for 7 months and then another 5 months on stainless steel.

Issue 246 End of December 2019, The Wine Advocate
The 2018 Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica shows very integrated oak, something they have been working on for a while, gradually using less new oak and larger barrels. It's varietal and felt more reductive than oxidative, and some of the barrels, where the wine was kept until August 2019, went through malolactic. That has provided some creaminess and a soft texture with tender acidity. 32,000 bottles and 160 magnums produced. It was bottled in October 2019.
José Pariente is one of the leading producers in Rueda. All their vineyards have been transformed to organic farming, and they expect to have them all certified in 2020. There is a new label, Finca Las Comas, their first single-vineyard bottling.
