Description
Belondrade and Ossian are considered the best white (Verdejo) wines of Spain. Both made from very old Verdejo vineyards (with those of Ossian being extremely old). The Spanish wine region Rueda where Belondrade makes its wines is located in Spain 165km northwest of Madrid in the heart of Castilla y Leon on the banks of the Duero (Portuguese Douro) which flows into the sea at Porto.
Made from 100% Verdejo yeast and their wine matures in oak barrels. Before bottling, the wine from the different barrels is mixed together in stainless steel cuvees. The wine is only lightly filtered. On the nose white fruit and lightly roasted aromas from the partly new oak barrels and in the taste ripeness, and fatness, but still sufficiently fresh due to the right balance with the present acids. A truly magnificent and special wine. A total of several 10,000 bottles are made of which only very limited are delivered to the Netherlands. Incidentally, from the harvest in the past 2,500 bottles went to the restaurant of El Bulli (according to experts this was one of the best restaurants in the world located near Barcelona) and this was Johan Cruijff's favorite wine.

The 2017 Belondrade y Lurton continues the move started years ago toward more elegance and freshness and especially wood that is much better integrated and less invasive of the varietal aromas of the delicate Verdejo grape. Despite the warm, dry and challenging style of the year, the wine is elegant and perfumed, fresh and varietal, complex, subtle, clean and precise. This is as good as it gets. Bravo! 2017 was a low-yielding vintage that delivered 95,136 bottles, 1,904 magnums, 200 Jeroboams and 60 Imperials. It was bottled in July 2018.
It's incredible to see Belondrade celebrating its 25th anniversary, as I remember the release of their 1994 Belondrade and Lurton like it was yesterday. It was a wine that changed the appreciation of Rueda, Verdejo and whites from Spain in general. Today, the wines are still the most elegant produced in Rueda, something you see so clear when tasting their wines next to others from the region.

White wines have been made in the Rueda region for centuries. The grandeur of the buildings, churches, monasteries and estates of Nava del Rey and Rueda testify to the enormous wealth in the past. The division of the domains made winemaking so loss-making that many vineyards disappeared. Today the area is very much on the rise again. Didier Belondrade and Brigitte Lurton started making wine in 1994 in Nava del Rey, in the heart of the Denominación. In this old town there is a labyrinth of abandoned cellars. The size of these cellars suggests how much wine was made here in the past. Within the walls of this old town, Belondrade and Lurton have chosen modern winemaking. The Belondrade is considered by many to be the best white wine in Spain, but the Belondrade Apolonio and the great Quinta Clarisa are also there. Very nice.
