Description
An excellent Pinot Noir from the Central Coast. It is the epitome of a Joey Tensley wine, creating a wine with balance, depth and elegance. The use of 30% whole bunch fruits creates a wonderful scent with bright red and black fruits and a spicy twist. This is a refreshing and easy Pinot Noir with a nice, fresh, green note in the aftertaste.
For us, Joey Tensley makes some of the most affordable (by California standards) wines to come out of the Central Coast. Joey and Jennifer Tensley chose “Fundamental Wines” as the name for their new line of Joey Tensley signature wines, a name that perfectly reflects the brand's philosophy. They strive to make fundamentally solid, uncomplicated wines that tell a story and have a real sense of place.
Winemaker Notes: "2021 is one of the best Pinot Noir vintages of all time! A super cool and moderate summer made for a wine that is bright with acid but had enough time to hang in the vineyard to gain color and power. The majority of the Pinot Noir comes from the acclaimed St Rita area giving the wine a beautiful red fruit component while the Santa Maria fruit gives it an unmistakable savory California pinot nose. Complex enough to make you think but still easy to drink. It's a drinkable wine but one that will go with so many types of dishes. Don't be afraid to test the waters with a big steak, this wine can handle it!"

Medium ruby, the 2021 Fundamental Pinot Noir has inviting aromas of cranberry sauce, orange peel, liquorice and loads of amaro-like accents. Medium-bodied, it’s silky and refreshing with a deep core of berry fruit and a long, layered finish. This is a lovely Pinot Noir with a notable quality-to-price ratio!

91/100 - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Pinot Noir, which was just bottled before this tasting, sports a deep ruby hue to go with an upfront, fleshy, fruit-forward style that carries classic Pinot Noir spiced red fruits, some subtle herbal, forest floor notes, a round, expansive mid-palate, and an excellent finish. This brings terrific fruit and texture while showing plenty of classic Pinot Noir character. Drink it over the coming 2-4 years.
These Fundamental Wines are made by Joey Tensley and focus on value. Based on this tasting, I’d say he succeeds admirably.
