Description
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary the Rio dos Patos or the River of the Ducks. The trademark is the ducks on the labels. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes and few vineyards have this luxury and this partly explains why this winery can make very beautiful wines because there is never any water debt. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo that has the influence of the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening.
The Herdade do Sobroso Reserva Tinto (Barrique Select) is a blend of Tempranillo (Aragonez), Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Alfrocheiro, so Portuguese through and through. The grapes were picked by hand and transported to the winery for fermentation and maceration in stainless steel (temperature controlled) for 21 days. The wine was then aged for 12 months in 500 liter oak barrels. It is a very full red wine, intense red in color. On the nose it is a complex wine with aromas of blackcurrants, jam and chocolate. Very nice and long aftertaste. The Sobroso Reserva is a wonderful wine with especially spicy dishes such as lamb, pork belly, stews and mature cheeses.
Fact : Aragonez, that is what the Portuguese from the Alentejo province call the national blue grape of Spain, the Tempranillo. Originally a Spanish grape. A reliable grape that ripens early, hence the term 'Temprano', which means 'early'.
Hubrecht Duijker:
"A beautiful, almost idyllic estate in the southeast (Alentejo) of Portugal, called Herdade de Sobroso. It covers 1600 hectares and you can stay comfortably in both rooms and cottages, while the on-site restaurant prepares dishes based on regional ingredients. The domain also has 60 hectares of vineyards that have produced a red wine such as the Barrique Select 2015. This tastes meaty and spicy, with shades of vanilla, sun-ripened black fruit and a laurel leaf right, because the maturing barrels were not 225 liters (classic barrique size) but 500 liters. The grapes used were aragonez, trincadeira, alicante bouschet and alfrocheiro, a typical Portuguese mix.
