History of Graymore Wines and the Edna Valley Region

Graymore Wines from Edna Valley, California, was born with the intention of showcasing the unique combination of ocean influences and dark clay soils in a single Chardonnay. The name Graymore refers to the silvery-gray morning mist and gray clay terroir of the region. Edna Valley enjoys California’s longest growing season thanks to cold ocean mists, sun-drenched afternoons and cool evening breezes – ideal conditions for balanced and aromatic white wines.

Climate, location and soil of Edna Valley Chardonnay

The vineyards are located in the coastal region of Central California, shielded by mountains but open to the Pacific Ocean. This location provides daily morning mist followed by cool breezes, which leads to slow, even ripening and retains lively acidity. The soils consist of volcanic and marine sediments, particularly Zaca Clay which is rich in limestone and provides minerality and refinement to the wine. This lesser-known Edna Valley, located between San Francisco and Los Angeles in California, has already built a very good reputation in the short term for fantastic Chardonnay wines.

Grapes, harvest and vinification of Graymore Chardonnay 2021

The 2021 release of Graymore Chardonnay is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes from certified sustainable vineyards (Moretti Canyon and Edna Ranch). Harvest took place on October 8 and 21, 2021. After soft pressing, the wine underwent fermentation and aging for 23 days in neutral French and Austrian oak, which adds structure without being overpowering.

In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a pale golden yellow color with a subtle honey sheen. The nose opens with ripe apple, pear, lime blossom and delicate notes of coconut and tropical fruits such as pineapple and hibiscus. In the mouth, the wine is medium-bodied with a fresh acid structure. Flavors of green apple, peach, lime and butterscotch are accompanied by a creamy texture and a long, elegant finish.
