Description
When we talk about Burgundy, Domaine Faiveley is one of the very best addresses. This is a large family business with approximately 120 hectares of vineyards, including famous names such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet and Chablis Grand Cru.
However, it is also a family winery with 10 hectares of Grand cru and almost 25 hectares of Premier cru. The first step was taken in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley; his son Joseph turned the winery into a great top company and his wines became ambassadors of Burgundy wines all over the world. With a clear, elegant and striking style, wines are produced here without any exception that meet the ideal image of Burgundy. “A winery of very high quality, which represents the full glory of French viticulture,” writes the famous wine author duo Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve in France.
Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time-honored traditions practiced for centuries in their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage benefits from special attention that makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes a faithful reflection of its terroir.
The village of Puligny-Montrachet is located between the well-known appellations Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet. This region has exceptional terroirs where Chardonnay is perfectly expressed. Although wine was already being grown here in the 12th century, the name of the Montrachet vineyard was not added to the village name Puligny until 1879. This wine region mainly produces white wines from Chardonnay.
The area "Champ Gain" covers 10 hectares and is located just below the Premier Cru vineyard "La Garenne", on the highest part of the hill. The name of this plot means "Land reclamation from the forest" and as the name already suggests , there used to be a forest on this piece of land before vines were planted. The vineyard has been under the ownership of Domaine Faiveley since 2014.
The Faiveley Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Gain has a very aromatic bouquet with citrus, passion fruit and pineapple. Supplemented with subtle notes of toast. The taste is full and rich and has an excellent balance. A beautiful wine with a tight mineral aftertaste full of aromas.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain is excellent, mingling scents of citrus oil and peach with notions of freshly baked bread, hazelnuts and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's satiny but tensile, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, saline finish.
Jérôme Flous told me that he began harvest on August 19, and he was as pleased with the wines as he was taken aback by their vibrancy and saturated hues. It's a terrific set of wines for Faiveley, with lower alcohol and lower pHs than in 2019 but with incredible concentration and purity. Everything reviewed here comes warmly recommended.

The history of Domaine Faiveley dates back to 1825. The domain has been family-owned for 7 generations and is located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of Burgundy. 127 ha Vineyards, spread over Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, of which 12 vineyards with Grand Cru classification, 25 with Premier Cru classification and 6 vineyards with a "Monopole" classification. The estate is managed by Erwan Faiveley, who keeps the work in the vineyards in-house to control the quality of the grapes. The hand-picked harvest is carefully transported to 19th century vaulted cellars located in Nuits-Saint-Georges. To make great Burgundies, Erwan Faiveley combines the principles of modern oenology with traditional aging in French oak barrels. All this contributes to the fact that Faiveley wines are highly regarded.
