Description
Founded in 1982 by Naoko and Gustav Dalla Valle, the winery is located 800 feet above the Silverado Trail and offers excellent views of the landscape. In the early 1980s, Naoko's visionary idea of planting vines against the hillsides astonished the Napa Valley. Today, some of California's finest wines are produced here. In 1992, Dalla Valle's Cabernet Sauvignon received 100 Parker points. It was the second California wine to receive this perfect score.
This 2021 Maya has again received the maximum 100/100 points from the beautiful 2021 year. The 2021 Maya is simply a beautiful wine, imbued with class, with deep, complex aromas of violets and cassis, earthy notes and hints of tobacco and mint. It is medium to full bodied, cool, silky and refined. Very elegant yet concentrated, restrained and controlled. Everything from the sincere fruit to the lingering savoury finish. Although already accessible, this wine will continue to drink well for another two decades or more.

Simply a wonderful wine, the 2021 Maya oozes class, with deep, complex aromas of violets and cassis, earthy loam and hints of tobacco and mint. It's just medium to full-bodied, cool, silky and finessed. Supremely elegant but concentrated, just reined in, restrained. She's the "perfect" girl, the one so special a younger me would be afraid to ask out. The current me is married, so... I'll just sit here and drink it in. Readers should drink it in too. All of it, from the upfront fruit to the lingering, savory finish. While approachable now, this wine should continue to drink well for two decades or more.

Deep, dark-fruited character with plums, blackberries, chocolate and walnuts. Full-bodied, textural and velvety, with succulence and depth to its fruit. Structured, wide and super refined with a long, encompassing finish. It’s well integrated and balanced with a lively freshness, yet it needs some time. Better after 2027.

From: The 2021 Napa Valley Cabernets, Part One (Dec 2023)
The 2021 Maya is young, but so promising. A wine of density and stature, the 2021 offers striking vertical depth, with bright acids and plenty of tannin. All the elements are so well balanced. Intense red fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, new leather and cedar all meld together, but it is the whole rather than the sum of parts that is most impressive here. A blast of vibrant fruit explodes through to the finish. Unforgettable.
- By Antonio Galloni on May 2024
Generational transition is one of the hardest things for family wineries to deal with, regardless of region. Maya Dalla Valle has done a tremendous job with her 2021s. The wines marry all the textural intensity readers have come to expect here but also show a touch more precision and nuance than in the past. These magnificent wines point to a brilliant future as Dalla Valle moves into its second generation.

Naoko Dalla Valle comes from a Japanese dynasty of sake producers, but became more interested in the local wines in California. Since her husband's untimely death in 1995, she has led Dalla Valle alone. She has since taken it to the top of the Napa Valley. She is supported by winemaker Andy Erickson, consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and also her daughter Maya, who for a long time wanted nothing to do with the winery. After Maya had studied in Washington, she decided to pay a visit to Michel Rolland in Bordeaux. Ornellaia, Pétrus and Château Latour followed. "Now she's overqualified," her mother says with a wink. Maya is interested in the biodynamics she learned during her travels. In Dalla Valle, biodynamic work has been going on for a long time. In addition to barrels from the best cooperages, the cellar also contains clay amphorae, such as those at Pontet-Canet in Bordeaux, where biodynamic work has also been carried out for a long time.
