Description
Château Mouton Rothschild Winery
Château Mouton Rothschild is among Bordeaux's finest and has been classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé since 1973. Located in Pauillac, the estate is known for its rich history, iconic labels, and distinctive style. Le Petit Mouton is the château's second wine and directly benefits from the rigorous selection process for the Grand Vin. In vintages where Mouton Rothschild is blended exclusively from the core plateaux, such as 2021, Le Petit Mouton has access to plots often used for the Grand Vin.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Pauillac and the 2021 vintage
Pauillac is known for structured, Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wines with power, freshness, and excellent aging potential. The deep gravel soils along the Gironde estuary ensure excellent drainage and even ripening.
The 2021 vintage was cooler and more classic in style than previous years. Careful selection yielded wines with moderate alcohol, fresh acidity, and a more restrained power. For Le Petit Mouton, this resulted in a wine with balance, tension, and a distinct Pauillac character.
Vineyards and origins of Le Petit Mouton
The grapes for Le Petit Mouton come from vineyards surrounding the château, with sunny exposure and a high proportion of gravel in the soil. In 2021, this cuvée benefited from plots normally used for Grand Vins, which clearly enhanced its concentration and quality.
The location and soils provide ripe fruit, structure and a pronounced aromatic intensity.
Grape varieties and composition
The 2021 Le Petit Mouton is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 0.5% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon defines the profile, with structure, freshness, and length.
Merlot adds roundness and suppleness, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contribute aromatic nuance and spiciness.
Harvest and vinification
The harvest was rigorously selected to ensure only perfectly ripe grapes were used. Due to the cool growing season, precise timing was maintained for each plot to maintain the balance between ripeness and freshness.
The vinification focused on preserving fruit purity and structure. The oak aging enhances the wine's character without overpowering the fruit, resulting in a layered and precise style.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby red color. The nose is rich and expressive, with aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, and cassis, complemented by notes of licorice, mint, dark chocolate, and subtle spices.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a dense and velvety texture. The fruit is concentrated and bright, supported by sweet, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity adds tension and ensures a long, balanced finish.
Structure, style and drinking window
The 2021 Le Petit Mouton is powerful yet controlled in style, with a clear Cabernet Sauvignon signature. The wine already shows charm, but would benefit from a few years of bottle aging.
Within its drinking window, the wine will show more coherence and complexity, while retaining the fresh and classic Pauillac structure.
Summary of professional reviews

The 2020 Le Petit Mouton benefits from the fact that the grand vin this year derives almost exclusively from the estate's core gravel terraces, meaning that many parcels that were included in, for example, the 2018 Mouton ended up in the Petit Mouton in 2020. Offering up aromas of cassis, cigar wrapper and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a broad attack and a layered, concentrated mid-palate.

This is surprisingly full-bodied and round, reflecting the warmth and sunny exposure of the vineyard around the chateau. Tangy and vivid with currants, fresh flowers and plenty of energy and length. The 2021 Le Petit-Mouton is a bit slender and reserved in this vintage, but very fine nonetheless. All the elements are nicely balanced. Dried herbs, orange peel, mint, pine, cinnamon and new leather open with a bit of coaxing. I would give this a few years to soften. The Cabernet Sauvignon imprint is quite strong today

From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
The 2021 Le Petit-Mouton is a powerful wine, but not quite the charmer it can be. There's good fruit density, but the tannins are a bit severe. I imagine at least some of that is attributable to the relatively high percentage of Cabernet in the blend. Overall, the 2021 comes across as a bit severe, though.

Château Mouton Rothschild is an icon of Pauillac. This legendary estate combines a rich history, unique terroir, and wines that belong to the very top worldwide. A name that fascinates wine lovers and collectors generation after generation.
History of Château Mouton Rothschild
In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the Château Brane-Mouton estate in Pauillac and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. His aim was to serve his own wine to his distinguished guests. In 1922, his great-grandson Philippe de Rothschild took over. Two years later, he decided that all wines should be bottled at the château itself — a revolutionary move in Bordeaux at the time. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the famous 1855 classification.
Later, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took the helm. She modernized the estate and in 1962 opened a museum on the property. After her passing in 2014, the château came under the leadership of her children Camille, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais, keeping it very much a family affair.
Location and terroir in Pauillac
Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, close to the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from the mild maritime climate and the protection of the nearby Les Landes forest. The soil is made up of gravel over layers of clay and limestone. This unique combination delivers powerful yet elegant wines with great ageing potential.
Pauillac itself is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations. The village is home to three Premier Grands Crus Classés: Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and of course Château Mouton Rothschild.
Grapes and winemaking at Château Mouton Rothschild
The estate covers about 90 hectares of vineyards. Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up more than eighty percent. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small portion of Petit Verdot complete the blend. Together they provide wines with depth, structure, and complexity.
The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. In the impressive cellars, they are vinified in modern oak vats, with each parcel treated separately. This ensures that the character of each plot can fully express itself in the final wine.
Special wines from the estate
Alongside the Grand Vin, the château also produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton. Made from younger vines, it is approachable earlier in its life. There is also a white wine, Aile d’Argent, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and a touch of Muscadelle. Fresh, aromatic, and released only in small quantities.
Another signature of Château Mouton Rothschild is the label art. Since 1945, a world-renowned artist has been commissioned each year to design a unique label. Names such as Picasso, Miró, and Warhol have all contributed, making these bottles true collector’s items.
Key facts to remember
- Château Mouton Rothschild is the only estate ever promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé.
- The estate houses its own wine museum, celebrating the link between wine and art.
- The second wine Le Petit Mouton and the white Aile d’Argent are highly sought after by enthusiasts.
- The iconic labels are redesigned each year by major artists and are famous worldwide.
