CHÂTEAU LYNCH‑BAGES Grand Cru Classé - Pauillac - The power and elegance of a great Pauillac

Bold, innovative, and with a reputation for often being the last to harvest, Jean-Charles Cazes defined the Lynch-Bages style in the 1930s. The wine's distinctive character has earned it a place among Pauillac's finest. It combines structure, finesse, and elegance, offering generous aromas in its youth and developing deeper complexities with bottle aging. The estate's reputation as a top-quality winemaker began in 1945 after a series of exceptional vintages. Since then, Lynch-Bages has continued to produce outstanding wines, even during years considered challenging in the Bordeaux region. The wine's deep color and tannic backbone have become part of its signature style. Jean-Michel Cazes, Jean-Charles' grandson, has worked diligently over the years to develop and refine the wine's supple and smooth structure. Vintage after vintage, the estate's precise and excellent winemaking techniques have firmly established Lynch-Bages' reputation for consistent quality.

The 2021 Lynch Bages is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new. It has a modest alcohol content of 13.14%. In the glass, the Lynch Bages is a very deep purple-black in color. The wine needs some time to mature, so decanting in its younger years is certainly recommended, but then a legion of aromas is released, including pure, ripe blackcurrants, black cherries, and preserved plums that seamlessly transition into roses, cedar (cigar box), incense, cardamom, and savory notes of black olives and smoked meat. The palate is full-bodied with a solid base of very firm, very ripe, grainy tannins and an excellent freshness that supports the generous layers of black fruit with a superb finish.

This is a 1.5 litre magnum – even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.

The founder of Lynch-Bages is the Irish John Lynch who settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century. The village of Bages is home to the château. Since 1933, Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family, an institution in the Médoc and a famous name in the world of wine. Third generation André Cazes was mayor of the municipality of Pauillac from 1947 to 1991. His son Jean-Michel has been running the family domain for several decades. His motto is; "great wine in search of the absolute". Given the appreciation for and status of Lynch-Bages, this 'absolute' has been reasonably achieved. Officially the château has the status of 5th Grand Cru Classé, but unofficially it is counted among the greatest of the Médoc. The other parts of the family business can also be described as very successful. Cordeillan-Bages, winery, hotel and best dining in the surrounding area and restaurant / caterer Le Chapon Fin in Bordeaux are good examples of this. Father André founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc in the late 1940s and Jean-Michel can call himself the founder of the École du Bordeaux. In short, an eventful family in the world of wine.
