CHÂTEAU LYNCH‑BAGES Grand Cru Classé - Pauillac - The power and elegance of a great Pauillac
Bold, innovative and with a reputation for often being the last to harvest, Jean-Charles Cazes defined Lynch-Bages style in the 1930s. The distinctive character of the wine has earned it a place among the best in Pauillac. It combines structure, finesse and elegance, offering generous aromas in its youth and developing deeper complexities with bottle ageing. The estate's reputation as a top quality wine producer began in 1945 after a series of exceptional vintages. Since then, Lynch-Bages has continued to produce excellent wines, even during years considered difficult in the Bordeaux region. The wine's deep color and tannic backbone have become part of its signature style. Jean-Michel Cazes, grandson of Jean-Charles, has worked hard over the years to develop and refine the supple and smooth structure of the wine. Vintage after vintage, the estate's precise and exquisite winemaking techniques have firmly established Lynch-Bages' reputation for consistent quality.
The 2021 Lynch Bages is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot which has matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new. It has a modest alcohol content of 13.14%. In the glass, the Lynch Bages has a very deep purple-black colour. The wine needs some time so decanting in its younger years is definitely recommended, but then a legion of aromas is released with pure, ripe black currants, black cherries and preserved plums which seamlessly transition into roses, cedar wood. (cigar box), incense, cardamom and savory notes of black olives and smoked meat. The palate is full with a solid base of very firm, very ripe, grainy tannins and an excellent freshness that supports the generous layers of black fruit with a great finish.

2021 Lynch-Bages
RP (93-95)
The second vintage vinified in the Caze family's new winery, the 2021 Lynch-Bages unwinds in the glass with aromas of minty cassis, sweet berries, loamy soil, black truffle and cigar wrapper, framed by nicely integrated new oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, it's a serious, layered, powerful, youthfully structured wine that will come together beautifully with maturation in barrel.

The 2020 Lynch-Bages is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, aging for around 18 months in French oak barriques, 75% new. It has an alcohol of 13.41%, a pH of 3.73 and an IPT (tannin index) of 93. Opaque purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with notes of crushed blackberries, cassis and boysenberries, plus touches of garrigue, red roses and cedar chest with hints of graphite and black olives. The medium-bodied palate has a rock-solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the tight-knit black fruit and earthy flavors, finishing long and mineral laced.

From: Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)
The 2021 Lynch-Bages, picked at 34hL/ha and matured in 75% new oak for a planned 18 months, has an outstanding bouquet, beautifully-defined and sensual, a mixture of black and blueberry fruit, very fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, good body and density, quite precise with a tensile finish. This fans out nicely on the finish. A very classy Lynch Bages with echoes of Jean-Michel Cazes' classics from the late eighties. 13.14% alcohol.
- By Neal Martin on April 2022
“The growing season started early,” Jean-Charles Cazes told me, the château was a hive of activity in preparation for their winery inauguration the following week. “Spring was wet and then summer was cool and rainy. There was mildew pressure all along. Yields were small for Lynch Bages at 34hL/ha and Les Ormes de Pez just under 40hL/ha. The low yields helped ripen the grapes; if we had had 50hL/ha, this would have made them more vegetal. We started picking on 27 September and finished on 9 October - classic dates compared to recent years. It was a discriminatory year between terroirs. Some decisions during blending were important, for example, whether to use the Merlot. In the new winery, we can work with better precision, and so it was a good year to have that new facility. The wines have evolved after fermentation and gained roundness during élevage.”

The founder of Lynch-Bages is the Irish John Lynch who settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century. The village of Bages is home to the château. Since 1933, Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family, an institution in the Médoc and a famous name in the world of wine. Third generation André Cazes was mayor of the municipality of Pauillac from 1947 to 1991. His son Jean-Michel has been running the family domain for several decades. His motto is; "great wine in search of the absolute". Given the appreciation for and status of Lynch-Bages, this 'absolute' has been reasonably achieved. Officially the château has the status of 5th Grand Cru Classé, but unofficially it is counted among the greatest of the Médoc. The other parts of the family business can also be described as very successful. Cordeillan-Bages, winery, hotel and best dining in the surrounding area and restaurant / caterer Le Chapon Fin in Bordeaux are good examples of this. Father André founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc in the late 1940s and Jean-Michel can call himself the founder of the École du Bordeaux. In short, an eventful family in the world of wine.
