Description
Duhart-Milon is one of the most prestigious châteaux in the Pauillac appellation. In 1855, the château was included in the renowned classification of Médoc wines. The château is now part of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group. The history of Château Duhart-Milon dates back to the early 18th century, when the owner of Château Lafite, Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, used Milon wines as his "second wine." By 1840, the château, now called Duhart-Milon, already owned 40 hectares of vineyards of the highest quality. After a difficult period in the middle of the last century, Duhart-Milon became the property of the Rothschild family. A new period of great prosperity began.
Château Duhart Milon is located in the Pauillac appellation, west of Château Lafite-Rothschild. The château currently boasts over 70 hectares of vineyards. The soil is typical of the region, consisting of a mixture of fine gravel, sand, and limestone. Combined with the mild climate, this makes it an ideal location for Cabernet Sauvignon, the main grape variety here. The château also uses Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is over 30 years.
The close collaboration with neighboring Château Lafite-Rothschild has resulted in a significant improvement in quality. Typical characteristics include low yields, hand harvesting, classic vinification, and a keen sensitivity to the individual character of each vintage. This results in exceptionally high-quality wines that reflect the distinctive character of the Pauillac appellation: a combination of power, elegance, and a unique capacity for aging. The wine is aged in oak barrels from the estate's own cooperage. Vinification for this wine takes place through controlled fermentation in tanks before maturing in barriques. Depending on the vintage, this maturation lasts 10 to 18 months.
The Duhart-Milion is a blend of the typical Pauillac blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. It is deep purple-red in color, shifting to garnet to brownish red. It has a powerful, richly nuanced aroma with notes of black cherry, blackberry, and cedar, along with a lovely oaky note. It has a full, firm attack, a very smooth texture, and a complex fruity flavor with earthy notes, playful tannins, the freshness of the Cabernet, and impressive length. The wine is at its best when the Merlot has fully ripened, as this is when the wine acquires the Merlot tannins, acidity, and vegetal notes that add complexity. The vineyard borders that of Château Lafite Rothschild (same owners), and Lafite's refined elegance is almost always present in Duhart-Milon, along with spicy oak, vanilla, and tobacco notes. The cellars are located on the quayside of Pauillac. Of the barrels used there, 50% are new. This is a 1.5-liter magnum – even tastier, more festive, and with a longer drinking window.

Incorporating fully 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Duhart-Milon unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, lively and persuasively concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish, it's a classy, serious wine that reflects all the progress this estate has been making over the last decade.
Duhart-Milon's vineyards are later-maturing than Lafite's, and the soils are less inherently balanced: the clay-rich parts of the vineyard are richer in clay than at Lafite, and the gravel-rich parts of the vineyard are richer in gravel—whereas Lafite's predominantly gravel soils sometimes contain more than 10% clay. That explains why Duhart-Milon historically often produced leaner wines than Lafite, with less mid-palate amplitude; but a warming climate and more attention to viticultural detail (sowing cover crops, for example, in clay-rich parts of the vineyard) are mitigating these disadvantages, and recent vintages have seen this estate attain new qualitative heights. As at all the Domaines Barons de Rothschild properties, winemaking and élevage are very classical, with regular rackings and the majority of the barriques derived from the in-house cooperage (emphasizing lightly toasted Allier and Nevers oak seasoned for 24 months), and as at Lafite, Cabernet is very much in the ascendant here, something that the 2021 vintage has only amplified.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Duhart-Milon comes skipping out of the glass with vibrant notes of crushed black cherries, black raspberries and plum preserves, plus an exotic spice undercurrent of cumin seed, star anise and cardamom, with an earthy touch of black truffles. The medium-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating, juicy black fruits with a plush texture and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
The blend this year is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot, with the alcohol coming in at 13.1%.
"For Duhart-Milon, the August rain was absolutely a godsend!," said Technical Director Eric Kohler, referring to the previous impact of the drought on the vines at this site.
This vintage is the first vintage vinified in Duhart-Milon's new cellar. "It enables us to divide the plots more," Kohler added. "Instead of 30 glasses, we had 50 glasses this year to blend. It gives us much more precision."
I've been very impressed with the upward trajectory of this Château, even given challenging vintages like 2020. A property to watch!

This is so refined with beautiful currant, berry and some subtle chocolate and coffee. It’s full and very subtle with fine tannins that have a long finish. Such purity and finesse with structure. Fresh and savory. 72% cabernet sauvignon and 28% merlot.

The 2021 Duhart-Milon, which is aged in 50% new oak, has a clean, precise bouquet of mineral-driven black fruit and touches of pencil lead and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and focused, with sappy black fruit and fine depth. This is a typically classically styled Duhart-Milon, though it does not quite have the persistence to rank as a top-rank vintage. But it will appeal to those who appreciate old-school Pauillac.

“It was easy until flowering,” quipped Eric Kohler when I visited the First Growth, Saskia de Rothschild occupied by visiting royalty. “We were not concerned by frost. There was a long and wet period that began in mid-June until mid-August. We had 250mm of rain in June and July. If the rain had fallen over just three or four days, then it would not have been a big problem, but it was always wet and humid. This meant the fight against mildew was difficult. Also, we are in conversion, our first year in 2021 (L’Evangile began in 2018). We were ready though, as we took enough time to prepare. After the fight [with the inclement weather] there was one month of excellent conditions until 10 September when we really saw the vintage and maturity changing. The first analysis of sugar level was not as high as it had been in 2018, 2019 or 2020, but it was impressive for the conditions we had faced, and after that, the progress in maturity was excellent and restored a lot of hope. We saw some light rain, and this added a bit of pressure and persuaded us not to wait, especially on precocious terroirs. So, we started picking on 22 September, though the heart of the picking was really from 27 September and finished on 8 October. We had been successful in terms of protecting the crop and picked at 33hL/ha at Lafite-Rothschild and 30hL/ha at Duhart-Milon. Maturity was satisfying considering the summer, though we never lost hope. During the vinification, we found good colour and density, the extraction went well, and rapidly we became more confident in 2012. On the Left Bank, we felt it was more difficult for the Merlot as it was more sensitive during the summer, the berries gorged with water and the véraison more spun out compared to Cabernet Sauvignon. So, there is less Merlot in Duhart-Milon and Lafite-Rothschild. When we know that the maturity is not perfect, we reduce the pumping over and wait to impart concentration through adding the vin de presse (14.5% for Duhart-Milon and 15% Lafite-Rothschild.) This year, it was clear which plots and tanks were designated for the Grand Vin and the Carruades de Lafite, with just one parcel of Merlot from the Plateau de Carruades in the former.”

The 2020 Duhart-Milon, the maiden vintage crafted in the new cellar, has a glorious, unashamedly seductive bouquet with pure blackberry, pressed violet and light vanilla pod aromas that are beautifully defined. You know, this could dupe you into thinking it came from the Right Bank! The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and here we revert back to the Left Bank thanks to its prominent graphite seam. Finely balanced, quite silky smooth towards the finish, this is an excellent Pauillac that punches above my expectations in barrel.

The 2020 Duhart-Milon, the maiden vintage crafted in the new cellar, has a glorious, unashamedly seductive bouquet with pure blackberry, pressed violet and light vanilla pod aromas that are beautifully defined. You know, this could dupe you into thinking it came from the Right Bank! The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and here we revert back to the Left Bank thanks to its prominent graphite seam. Finely balanced, quite silky smooth towards the finish, this is an excellent Pauillac that punches above my expectations in barrel.

Duhart-Milon is one of the most prestigious châteaux in the Pauillac appellation. In 1855, the château was included in the renowned classification of Médoc wines. The château is now part of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group. The history of Château Duhart-Milon dates back to the early 18th century, when the owner of Château Lafite, Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, used Milon wines as his "second wine." By 1840, the château, now called Duhart-Milon, already owned 40 hectares of vineyards of the highest quality. After a difficult period in the middle of the last century, Duhart-Milon became the property of the Rothschild family. A new period of great prosperity began.
Château Duhart Milon is located in the Pauillac appellation, west of Château Lafite-Rothschild. The château currently boasts over 70 hectares of vineyards. The soil is typical of the region, consisting of a mixture of fine gravel, sand, and limestone. Combined with the mild climate, this makes it an ideal location for Cabernet Sauvignon, the main grape variety here. The château also uses Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is over 30 years.
The close collaboration with neighboring Château Lafite-Rothschild has resulted in a significant improvement in quality. Typical characteristics include low yields, hand harvesting, classic vinification, and a keen sensitivity to the individual character of each vintage. This results in exceptionally high-quality wines that reflect the distinctive character of the Pauillac appellation: a combination of power, elegance, and a unique capacity for aging. The wine is aged in oak barrels from the estate's own cooperage. Vinification for this wine takes place through controlled fermentation in tanks before maturing in barriques. Depending on the vintage, this maturation lasts 10 to 18 months.
The Duhart-Milion is a blend of the typical Pauillac blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. It is deep purple-red in color, shifting to garnet to brownish red. It has a powerful, richly nuanced aroma with notes of black cherry, blackberry, and cedar, along with a lovely oaky note. It has a full, firm attack, a very smooth texture, and a complex fruity flavor with earthy notes, playful tannins, the freshness of the Cabernet, and impressive length. The wine is at its best when the Merlot has fully ripened, as this is when the wine acquires the Merlot tannins, acidity, and vegetal notes that add complexity. The vineyard borders that of Château Lafite Rothschild (same owners), and Lafite's refined elegance is almost always present in Duhart-Milon, along with spicy oak, vanilla, and tobacco notes. The cellars are located on the quayside of Pauillac. Of the barrels used there, 50% are new. This is a 1.5-liter magnum – even tastier, more festive, and with a longer drinking window.

Incorporating fully 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Duhart-Milon unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, lively and persuasively concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish, it's a classy, serious wine that reflects all the progress this estate has been making over the last decade.
Duhart-Milon's vineyards are later-maturing than Lafite's, and the soils are less inherently balanced: the clay-rich parts of the vineyard are richer in clay than at Lafite, and the gravel-rich parts of the vineyard are richer in gravel—whereas Lafite's predominantly gravel soils sometimes contain more than 10% clay. That explains why Duhart-Milon historically often produced leaner wines than Lafite, with less mid-palate amplitude; but a warming climate and more attention to viticultural detail (sowing cover crops, for example, in clay-rich parts of the vineyard) are mitigating these disadvantages, and recent vintages have seen this estate attain new qualitative heights. As at all the Domaines Barons de Rothschild properties, winemaking and élevage are very classical, with regular rackings and the majority of the barriques derived from the in-house cooperage (emphasizing lightly toasted Allier and Nevers oak seasoned for 24 months), and as at Lafite, Cabernet is very much in the ascendant here, something that the 2021 vintage has only amplified.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Duhart-Milon comes skipping out of the glass with vibrant notes of crushed black cherries, black raspberries and plum preserves, plus an exotic spice undercurrent of cumin seed, star anise and cardamom, with an earthy touch of black truffles. The medium-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating, juicy black fruits with a plush texture and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
The blend this year is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot, with the alcohol coming in at 13.1%.
"For Duhart-Milon, the August rain was absolutely a godsend!," said Technical Director Eric Kohler, referring to the previous impact of the drought on the vines at this site.
This vintage is the first vintage vinified in Duhart-Milon's new cellar. "It enables us to divide the plots more," Kohler added. "Instead of 30 glasses, we had 50 glasses this year to blend. It gives us much more precision."
I've been very impressed with the upward trajectory of this Château, even given challenging vintages like 2020. A property to watch!

This is a really pretty Duhart and fans out nicely on the palate with medium soft tannins that are polished. Gorgeous young wine. 81% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot.

This is so refined with beautiful currant, berry and some subtle chocolate and coffee. It’s full and very subtle with fine tannins that have a long finish. Such purity and finesse with structure. Fresh and savory. 72% cabernet sauvignon and 28% merlot.

The 2021 Duhart-Milon, which is aged in 50% new oak, has a clean, precise bouquet of mineral-driven black fruit and touches of pencil lead and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and focused, with sappy black fruit and fine depth. This is a typically classically styled Duhart-Milon, though it does not quite have the persistence to rank as a top-rank vintage. But it will appeal to those who appreciate old-school Pauillac.

“It was easy until flowering,” quipped Eric Kohler when I visited the First Growth, Saskia de Rothschild occupied by visiting royalty. “We were not concerned by frost. There was a long and wet period that began in mid-June until mid-August. We had 250mm of rain in June and July. If the rain had fallen over just three or four days, then it would not have been a big problem, but it was always wet and humid. This meant the fight against mildew was difficult. Also, we are in conversion, our first year in 2021 (L’Evangile began in 2018). We were ready though, as we took enough time to prepare. After the fight [with the inclement weather] there was one month of excellent conditions until 10 September when we really saw the vintage and maturity changing. The first analysis of sugar level was not as high as it had been in 2018, 2019 or 2020, but it was impressive for the conditions we had faced, and after that, the progress in maturity was excellent and restored a lot of hope. We saw some light rain, and this added a bit of pressure and persuaded us not to wait, especially on precocious terroirs. So, we started picking on 22 September, though the heart of the picking was really from 27 September and finished on 8 October. We had been successful in terms of protecting the crop and picked at 33hL/ha at Lafite-Rothschild and 30hL/ha at Duhart-Milon. Maturity was satisfying considering the summer, though we never lost hope. During the vinification, we found good colour and density, the extraction went well, and rapidly we became more confident in 2012. On the Left Bank, we felt it was more difficult for the Merlot as it was more sensitive during the summer, the berries gorged with water and the véraison more spun out compared to Cabernet Sauvignon. So, there is less Merlot in Duhart-Milon and Lafite-Rothschild. When we know that the maturity is not perfect, we reduce the pumping over and wait to impart concentration through adding the vin de presse (14.5% for Duhart-Milon and 15% Lafite-Rothschild.) This year, it was clear which plots and tanks were designated for the Grand Vin and the Carruades de Lafite, with just one parcel of Merlot from the Plateau de Carruades in the former.”
