Description
Deep garnet purple in colour, the Canon 2017 bursts from the glass with expressive notes of baked black cherries, kirsch, plum jam and black raspberries, plus hints of red roses, Ceylon tea, black olives and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is beautifully elegant and refined, with a soft, fine-grained texture and seamless freshness, ending long and minerally interwoven. The blend consists of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and is aged for 18 months in French oak, of which 50% is new.
This cru of 34 hectares belongs to the Wertheimer family, just like Ch Rauzan Ségla in Margaux. This family also owns the fashion house Chanel. Currently, director John Kolosa and the young cellar master Stéphane Bonnasse are improving the quality year after year. In 2011 the property was increased by 12.5ha thanks to the purchase of the neighbor Ch Matras, this vineyard was integrated into the second wine "Clos Canon". The terroir of Ch Canon is located at the very top of St Emilion on the limestone plateau and produces a concentrated but elegant, delicious wine that is at the level of the largest St Emilions in terms of quality! Organic products are used here to treat diseases, but without certification at the moment.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Canon bursts from the glass with expressive notions of baked black cherries, kirsch, plum preserves and black raspberries plus hints of red roses, Ceylon tea, black olives and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully elegant and refined, with a soft, finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend is 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and it was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new.
All the 2017 blends have been finished and the wines have been aging in barrel since February 2018. “2017 was a special year, in most people’s minds a tough year because of the frost, but in between that parenthesis of the frost and rain, it was a great year,” commented winemaker/technical director Nicolas Audebert. “There was no blockage in the vines (vine shutdown), compared to 2015 and 2016. We started harvest on September 4 and finished on September 22. We like volume with no feeling of volume, which is what you get in 2017.”

Extremely perfumed with blackcurrants, flowers, gunmetal, gunpowder and blackberries. Full-bodied, tight and reserved. The tannins are so tightly knit and just run through the center. Needs at least three or four years to open. A blend of 77% merlot and 23% cabernet franc. Better after 2023.

From: 2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)
Nicolas Audebert and his team have done it again. The 2017 Canon is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Rich and vertical in construction, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts richness and intensity in all of its dimensions. In the glass, the 2017 is sumptuous and layered, with superb detail and tons of sheer pedigree. In 20 years, readers will have a fabulous time tasting the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 together and debating their respective merits. Dark plum fruit, striking Franc aromatics and the clean, focused energy of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau make for a ravishing, exquisite wine of the highest level. In a word: breathtaking.
