Description
The Vino Nobile is the company's calling card. Most bottles are produced here. The wine has been produced by the house since 1968, and little has changed in the grape composition and the maturation method and duration since then. The wine represents everything the house stands for: freshness, elegance, complexity and great maturation potential.
The wine is made from 85% Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile, supplemented with small percentages of Colorino, Canaiolo and Mammolo. The grapes grow in vineyards with alluvial and sandy soils rich in lime, clay, silt and stones. The vines are at least 10 years old.
After manual harvesting, the wine ferments spontaneously in large oak barrels. This ensures a beautiful integration of the wood in the wine. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to 500 liter Allier barrels and large Slavonian oak barrels, where it matures for 18 to 24 months. The different wines are carefully blended into this elegant Vino Nobile. Inviting aromas of ripe cherries and plums, spiciness and subtle wood in the nose. Soft in taste with elegant notes of juicy cherry fruit, complemented by round tannins and beautiful acids.
Most of the vineyards in Cervognano are planted on alluvial and sandy limestone soils with a good percentage of silt, clay and stony structure that vary between the layers depending on the altitude. The average density is around 6,500 plants per hectare. Vino Nobile is produced with selected grapes from vineyards that are at least 10 years old, mainly planted on red, sandy and mineral soils to give the wine a lot of character and aging.

The Boscarelli 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano opens immediately to red and purple fruits, but the wine also has an ethereal side with cola, licorice and grilled herb. The tannins are firm and chalky, and the wine concludes with bright acidity. The blend is 85% Sangiovese with smaller parts of Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo. Final production is 50,000 bottles.
Luca De Ferrari and the team at Boscarelli make some of the most beautiful wines in the appellation.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2021 | $42
This red delivers purity, boasting aromas and flavors of cherry, pomegranate, earth and iron, while also staying lively, supported by a dense matrix of tannins. Balanced, with a finish of bitter almond, this needs a few years to integrate. Best from 2027 through 2042. 4,500 cases made.

From: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: An Unstoppable Force (Feb 2025)
The 2021 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a total pleasure to the senses, with a perfumed bouquet of wilted violet and lavender tones, a dusting of spices and dried strawberry scents. This is cool-toned and fresh, with pretty wild berry fruits and crunchy mineral notes elevated by a tinge of sour citrus. Giving yet long and gently tannic, this finishes with a resonance of blackberry and hints of spice. The 2021 is delicate yet impactful.

My hat is off to Luca De Ferrari and Boscarelli; these are some of the most successful wines of the 2020 vintage. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano of Boscarelli typically requires more time to come around in bottle, but also offers the balance for a long and steady evolution. In 2020, while the wines have the same lift and elegant feel that I associate with the vintage, they still possess harmonious structures. The mix is quite compelling. With that said, I’m eagerly looking forward to the 2021s, especially after tasting the flagship Vino Nobile. Lastly, as of 2021, the Costa Grande will carry the Pieve Cervognano designation. Boscarelli remains a benchmark of the region.

Paola and sons Luca and Nicolò carefully arranged vineyards and cellars to get maximum terroir expression in their wines.
Egidio Conradi grows up in an old Poliziana family in the Montepulciano region, but leaves for Genoa after his studies. Here he works for a long time as an international trader. But his passion for wine and love for Montepulciano are so strong that he decides to return to his native soil in the early 1960s. He buys two old, abandoned farmhouses with old vineyards in Cervignano di Montepulciano, in the heart of Montepulciano. According to Egidio, the ideal place to realize his dream: making top quality wines, authentic to this area and with a beautiful elegance.
Together with daughter Paola and her husband Ippolito De Ferrari, Edigio founded the Poderi Boscarelli winery in 1962. They realize that with the vineyards in the heart of Montepulciano they have struck gold. Together they replant vineyards and renovate and convert the old buildings into a modern winery and cellars. A large part of the vineyards are located on the slopes northeast of Montepulciano, in the Chiana valley. The valley has a special microclimate, where a constant airflow ensures ventilation and cooling in the vineyards. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and they suffer less from rot and fungi. The alluvial soil is rich in texture and sand and has good water permeability, giving the wines their characteristically elegant, mineral character. Each piece of land has its own character, which the family tries to reflect in the wines as much as possible. The age of the vines, the soil composition and the optimal ripeness of the grapes are taken into account. In this way, the house makes about 30 different, unique cuvées every year, which ferment and mature separately from each other and are then carefully blended.
Both of Paola's sons, Luca and Nicolò, have now joined the company. After high school, Luca initially starts training as a diplomat in Genoa, but decides to go back to his roots in 1988 to meet his mother and Dr. Maurizio Castelli, the house winemaker. Nicolò also joins in 1997. He is engaged in planting and tending the vineyards. 80% of the vineyards are planted with Sangiovese. The remaining 20% contains various indigenous grape varieties such as Mammolo, Canaiolo and Colorino and the international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In order to increase the diversity in the vineyards, and thus to give a better representation of the terroir, various vineyards work according to the Sélection Massale method. When planting vineyards, old, selected vines from the same vineyard or the immediate vicinity are used. This creates a mix of different clones of the same grape variety, which together provide a good representation of the terroir.
Minimal intervention is made in the cellars when making the wines. All wines ferment spontaneously using natural yeasts. Wood is used very dosed in the fermentation and maturation of the wines. The wines are pure, elegant and each have a clearly recognizable character. Wines from this region can sometimes be quite ripe and concentrated, but the relatively cool climate in the Chiana valley and the very careful way of working give Boscarelli wines an elegant, accessible character.
