Description
A delicious full bodied Aglianico wine this Salae Domini Irpinia Campi Taurasini DOC from the Italian top winery Antonio Caggiano from Campania . The vineyards in Taurasi where this beautiful wine comes from are located at about 350 meters above sea level and are surrounded by an atmosphere of folklore, ancient traditions, historic architecture and religion. The city of Taurasi has a historic city center with amazing architectural feats and ancient art pieces. Old churches and chapels embellish the area with its many folkloric festivals and traditions. Taurasi is an important wine center for the region. The soil of the vineyards is a mixture of clay and limestone. The grapes for this wine are always harvested quite late in the season, at the end of October / beginning of November. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, always at a controlled temperature. The wine ages in French oak barrels from the Troncai, Allier and Vosges areas for a period of about 8 to 10 months, depending on the grapes.
The wine has a deep ruby red color and a wonderfully fruity scent. A strong red wine with delicious herbs, roasted nuts and a fine light touch of licorice and tar. The wine is nicely balanced, velvety and delicate in the mouth and has a high concentration of beautifully ripe tannins.
FACT: In the Tab: Appendix you will find the official fact sheet of this fine wine. We will automatically send it to you when you order this wine. The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will also receive a nice discount.

The 2015 Irpinia Campi Taurasini Salae Domini is a tangy, spicy and intense red wine that is redolent of cherry confit, cinnamon, nutmeg and crushed clove. The wine reveals an herbal edge with balsamic or medicinal overtones. From a warm but balanced vintage, this is an exuberant and extravert red wine from the south of Italy. The oak spice is still very evident (it ages in barrique for eight months), but it should integrate well within the thick fiber of this juicy and enriched Aglianico. Some 6,000 bottles were made.
Giuseppe Caggiano and the team at this celebrated winery in Taurasi purchased an additional 2.5 hectares of Aglianico vines this past year. The estate farms clay soils mixed with limestone and volcanic elements at 300 to 400 meters above sea level. Cantina Antonio Caggiano makes up to 170,000 bottles per year.

Plenty of lavender, violets, brambles, herbs and freshly picked blackberries on the nose. Full-bodied and a little tannic but very structured and fine with fresh acidity and a chewy finish. Drink now or hold.

An invigorating yet completely unexpected mix of dusty rose, bright cherry, minty herbs and hints of candied citrus lift up from the 2019 Aglianico Salae Domini. It’s soft-textured, almost fleshy in feel, yet vibrant, with ripe red and black berries that give way to hints of licorice and sweet spice. This maintains wonderful energy yet also poise, tapering off fresh and classically dry. It’s not often that you find such a delicate expression and Aglianico that communicates such elegance. Plus, it bears mentioning that this was open for over twenty-four hours without any sign of decline.

The newest releases from Cantine Antonio Caggiano show that this father-and-son team work with some of the top parcels around Taurasi, founding a lovely balance between style and tradition. Antonio Caggiano started his winery in the early 1990s with a more modern/international style, which was less about trends at the time and more about trying to breathe life into a region that had fallen into the doldrums of tradition. In those days, there were very few producers that were making world-class Taurasi. However, with the assistance of Luigi Moio (today of Quintodecimo) as his consultant, Caggiano created wines that were clean yet elegant, powerful and widely appealing. Throughout this time, Antonio’s son, Giuseppe, learned at his side until the mid-2000s, when he took over the majority of responsibilities at the winery. Giuseppe Caggiano began to refine the winemaking practices and urged his father to move away from new oak and add larger-format barrels to the aging process. Today, Moio still consults, as he does for many of the region's top producers of Aglianico. Cantine Antonio Caggiano has expanded their portfolio to include regional white varieties. Quality shines through here from top to bottom. While most people will automatically gravitate toward the single-vineyard Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti with its hefty score, do not overlook the stylish Taurasini Salae Domini for medium-term drinking, nor the fresh and vivid Aglianico Taurì for its balanced drink-me-now personality.

Antonio Caggiano - the 'Barolo of the South'
The Italian winery Antonio Caggiano is located in the wine region of Campania in the municipality (and also DOCG) of Taurasi. Taurasi is an important wine center for the region and you will also find yourself in an atmosphere of folklore, ancient traditions, historical architecture and religion. The city of Taurasi has a historic city center with amazing architectural masterpieces and ancient art pieces. Old churches and chapels beautify the area with its many folkloric festivals and traditions.
The wines from the spectacular winery Antonio Caggiano are all very special. The top wine is the Taurasi Vina Macchia dei Goti, also known as the 'Barolo of the South'. Furthermore, the winery makes the beautiful Fiano di Avelino and Greco di Tufo, from the 2 most typical white grapes from the Campania. Both wines are named after distant places that Caggiono visited as a photographer. The winery makes 3 different DOCGs and only a few copy them. The Macchia was voted best red Aglianico wine in the New York Times and we totally agree.
History
The winery founder, Antonio Caggiano, is quirky and outgoing. In addition to being a winemaker, he has been a passionate and enthusiastic photographer who has traveled all over the world for years. From the cold of the Artic countries to the African desert, from the United States to South America and finally to the old family vineyard (Salae Domini) to work on the realization of his winery founded in 1990. Driven by an irresistible desire to give a voice to the history & traditions of his beloved Taurasi, Antonio decided to start his own winery.
The winery has beautiful cellars with numerous fascinating small tunnels, built and designed by Antonio, who is also an architect. These cellars are not only the place where barriques, bottles and barrels are kept, but they also represent a real museum of wine growing. In every corner, on every wall and in the multiple recesses in the stone walls, the typical tools and objects used by winemakers can be admired. In addition to the tools and vessels, there is a variety of wood, glass and stone artwork, some of which were created by Antonio himself and others received as gifts from artist friends.
Antonio started this winery partly for his own pleasure, and partly for the challenge. Not only to rediscover the aromas and flavors previously lost in Taurasi wine, but also to create a small museum of farming tools used in the past. The winery has a modern technical structure with an authentic style. Visitors are welcome to wander through the cellars, giving the impression of a mysterious underground land made between walls of large stones, arches and vaults. These great cellars are therefore one of the distinguishing features of this winery.
The company is currently run by Antonio's son Giuseppe. Giuseppe, helped by his father and thanks to meticulous and passionate hard work in the vineyard and winery, has contributed to achieving a quality, distinctive style that has marked winery Antonio Caggiano as one of the best representatives of Irpinia wines.
