Ribera del Duero, located in the Spanish region of Castilla y León along the Duero River (known as Douro in Portugal), is a renowned wine region covering approximately 200,000 hectares. Surrounded by protective mountains that shield the valley from extreme climatic conditions, Ribera del Duero experiences temperature fluctuations, reaching almost 40 degrees Celsius in summer and dropping below freezing in winter. The main grape variety in Ribera del Duero is Tinto Fino, also known as Tinta del País, a local variant of Tempranillo. This grape thrives in the challenging conditions of the region, covering 95% of the total vineyard area. Unlike in Rioja, Tinto Fino here is often cultivated as a monoculture due to the region's elevation and soil composition, resulting in fine, complex wines. The Designation of Origin (D.O.) requires a minimum of 75% Tinto Fino in the wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Malbec, Merlot, and Albillo are classified as permitted varieties. Garnacha Tinta, also known as Tinto Aragonés, is primarily used for producing rosé wines in Ribera del Duero.

Ribera del Duero's winemaking traditions have evolved, embracing both old techniques and modern innovations. Wineries like Vega Sicilia have been trendsetters, employing methods such as fermenting in open vats and aging wines for extended periods before bottling. Modern practices include fermenting after stealing and before pressing, with some bodegas using gravity-flow systems to handle the grapes and wine gently.

Ribera del Duero's climate

The region's extreme climate is a defining feature, described locally as "9 months of winter, 3 months of hell." Ribera del Duero experiences approximately 2400 hours of sunshine per year. The significant temperature variation between day and night during the growing season, owing to the vineyards' elevation between 720 to 1,100 meters above sea level, is crucial. Warm days allow grapes to ripen perfectly, while cold nights preserve acidity, resulting in well-balanced wines. This diurnal temperature range, combined with the unique "Meseta Central" plateau's location, imparts Ribera del Duero wines with a distinct character. Full-bodied, ripe, and powerful, these wines maintain a pleasant acidity, ensuring finesse and balance.

The Duero River, after which the D.O. is named, plays a vital role, moderating vineyard temperatures and protecting against frost. Additionally, the river contributes stone-rich deposits and creates diverse soil profiles, including limestone and clay in higher vineyards.

From the fresh white wine of Verdejo from Rueda to powerful red wine from Toro. The vineyards of Castilla y León, as the region is called in Spanish, are located high, at 500 to 900 meters. The soil is poor. The climate is extreme, with short, harsh winters and long, dry summers. Late frost until spring threatens the harvest every year. The grapes have to fight for every drop and that makes their juice rich and concentrated. Castile and Leon has 9 DOs, of which Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro and Bierzo are the most important.

DO Ribera del Duero

DO Ribera del Duero is one of the regions where wine has been produced for 3000 years. It is an area that mainly focuses on the Tepranillo grape, as red wines here must consist of at least 75% of this grape. In addition, international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec are also used. Thanks to the continental climate and the cooling provided by the Duero River, this is an ideal location for creating excellent wines. Venerable wineries such as Vega Sicilia show that Ribera del Duero can easily compete with the more famous Rioja region.

DO Toro

DO Toro is another region where the Tempranillo grape reigns supreme, where it is known as “Tinta de Toro.” Like other areas nearby, this area is crossed by the Duero River and enjoys a continental climate. The red wines in the DO Toro must consist of 100% of the Tinta de Toro grape. However, Tinto Roble wine can contain up to 10% Garnacha. In addition, white wines are also produced here, made from Verdejo or Malvasia grapes.

Red wine is made from blue grapes. The wines get their dark colour from the skin of the grape, which ferments with the grape juice. The intensity of the colour is determined by how long the juice has matured; a young red wine will have a somewhat purple colour, while older wines tend to be more orange or brown-red.

With around 10,000 varieties of grapes worldwide, you can go in all directions.

The most well-known blue grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah / Shiraz.

Types of red wine

There are many different types of grapes with different characteristics and aromas. The differences within grape varieties are due to the difference in climate, the soil where the vines are planted, and the amount of sun.

The end result is in the hands of the winemaker. During the process from juice to wine, the winemaker still has a lot of options to change the final product into what he wants to put on the market.

The upbringing of the wine plays a major role in this. After fermentation, the process of raising and maturing the wine begins. There are many options for influencing the wine, but the most well-known concerns the ageing in wood.

If the winemaker chooses to raise the wine on wood, many things come into play. The first choice is whether new or older barrels will be used. Older, used barrels release less or no more aromas and tannins, but they still have an oxidative function. New wood barrels let in dosed oxygen and ensure that the wine has aromas and tannins. This is more intense with smaller barrels than with large wooden barrels.

Dry red wine

The most famous red wine is a dry red wine. The number of grape varieties and different taste profiles are enormous. There is a nice glass of red for every moment.
