Description
Susana Balbo is one of Argentina's leading and most innovative winemakers. In 1981, Susana graduated as the first female oenologist in Argentine wine history. She then worked for 25 years for various large wine estates as a winemaker. She is seen as the 'Evita Péron' of Argentine viticulture. Influential, beloved and a bit controversial. Under her motto 'where there is a will, there is a wine' she creates her path to her ultimate dream: her own winery where she can go wild with her ideas about making sublime wines. In 1999 she started her own wine estate Dominio del Plato in the heart of the Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza. The winery is situated breathtakingly against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. In 2016, the name was changed to Susana Balbo Wines.
The Brioso comes from Susana Balbo's Signature series and is therefore her most beautiful and special wines. The full name of the Brioso is SUSANA BALBO WINES AGRELO LUJÁN DE CUYO BRIOSO SINGLE VINEYARD and this classic Single Vineyard Agrelo is a blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Malbec, 22% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, matured together in brand new French oak barrels. for 15 months. It is spicy, tangy and has notes of berries and some spicy oak without being overdone. There is ripeness but not excess and very good freshness. There are some roasted flavors (coffee, dark chocolate) in the aftertaste. It has a range of layered flavors including dark chocolate, tobacco and cedar, leading to a long finish.

The nose of the 2020 Brioso transports me directly to Agrelo and to a warmer year when tasting it next to other wines from cooler vintages in the Valle de Uco. It's therefore more classical, with the floral Luján de Cuyo aromas of violets and herbs from the varieties—52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It achieved 14.5% alcohol and matured in new barriques for 15 months, which lent it abundant tannins and some oak aromas and flavors that are going to require some more time in bottle to be melted. 44,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021.
The two vineyards from Susana Balbo—in Agrelo (20 hectares) and Gualtallary (36 hectares)—are certified organic, and they also buy grapes from producers, some organic and some not, and some wines are already certified. In total, she produces around two million bottles per vintage. They produce up to 40% of white and rosé, quite unusual in Mendoza and Argentina.

Racy and layered with black and red fruit, black chocolate, black olives, blueberries and a mineral accent. A tangy, elegant and juicy palate, rounded by dusty tannins that melt into the fruit. Long and refined. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 23% malbec, 19% cabernet franc and 6% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

From: Argentina: Making It Work with Resilience and Stylistic Ingenuity (Nov 2022)
The 2020 Signature Brioso is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo and spent 14 months in French barrels. A dark garnet in the glass. The intricate nose offers herbs, ripe fruit and hints of plum, pepper and redcurrant with a whiff of mint. Creamy and expressive in the mouth with an expansive flow, good grip and juice, this is a classical, intense red with a prolix finish.

You can say that Susana Balbo Wines has an unusual history. The woman behind this winery actually wanted to study nuclear medicine, but her parents did not allow her to leave Mendoza. Then she surrendered to the family culture: viticulture. She was the first woman in Argentina to become an oenologist and, once a winemaker, the first Argentine woman to be hired for advice by international wineries. In 1999 she started her own winery in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. Her son and daughter also work in the family business. Located at the foot of the Andes mountains, the vineyards benefit from the pure meltwater that flows down in spring and summer. When making her wines, Susana combines the knowledge of the terroir with winemaking techniques. The art of blending, she says, is the way of expressing a winemaker's top talent. The play of aromas and flavors from the different terroirs resembles the color palette used by a painter.
