Description
Susana Balbo is one of Argentina 's leading and most innovative winemakers . In 1981 Susana graduated as the first female oenologist in Argentine wine history. She then worked for 25 years for various large wine estates as a winemaker. She is seen as the 'Evita Péron' of Argentine viticulture. Influential, loved and a little controversial. Under her motto 'where there is a will, there is a wine' she creates her way to her ultimate dream: her own winery where she can go wild with her ideas about making sublime wines. In 1999 she started her own wine estate Dominio del Plato in the heart of the Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza. The winery is breathtakingly set against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. In 2016 the name was changed to Susana Balbo Wines.
The Susana Balbo Cabernet Sauvignon from the Signature series is the top of the range. The wine is a blend of h95% Cabernet Sauvignon &. 5% Cabernet Franc and comes from the Finca Brío, Los Árboles, Uco Valley
at a serious height of an average of 1,167 meters. The grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed and during the fermentation pumped over 3 times a day for flavor and color extraction. This all takes no less than 20-30 days after which the Balbo matures for 13 months in 80% new French oak barrels and 20% 2nd year barrels.
The wine has a deep red color in the glass. This wine has lively aromas of black fruit, tobacco and pepper with spicy-floral hints. It has an intense and balanced acidity. The oak is beautifully integrated with elegant and fine-grained tannins. A subtle minerality provides freshness and good length.
This beautiful Cabernet is the perfect companion for beef, pork, lamb, quail and other game (birds). It also goes well with cream-based sauces.

Sourced from the same terroir as the BenMarco Cabernet, the 2016 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon was produced with grapes from specific plots of the same vineyard in Los Árboles, harvested a little later and aged in oak for a little longer here. It's juicy, expressive and varietal, and it has a round palate with some herbal flavors and fine, round tannins. 50,000 bottles produced.
As I've seen in other places in Argentina, there is a clear evolution to fresher wines with less oak and more expression of the varietal and the place.

You can say that Susana Balbo Wines has an unusual history. The woman behind this winery actually wanted to study nuclear medicine, but her parents did not allow her to leave Mendoza. Then she surrendered to the family culture: viticulture. She was the first woman in Argentina to become an oenologist and, once a winemaker, the first Argentine woman to be hired for advice by international wineries. In 1999 she started her own winery in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. Her son and daughter also work in the family business. Located at the foot of the Andes mountains, the vineyards benefit from the pure meltwater that flows down in spring and summer. When making her wines, Susana combines the knowledge of the terroir with winemaking techniques. The art of blending, she says, is the way of expressing a winemaker's top talent. The play of aromas and flavors from the different terroirs resembles the color palette used by a painter.
