Description
Susana Balbo is one of Argentina's leading and most innovative winemakers. In 1981, Susana graduated as the first female oenologist in Argentine wine history. She then worked for 25 years for various large wine estates as a winemaker. She is seen as the 'Evita Péron' of Argentine viticulture. Influential, beloved and a bit controversial. Under her motto 'where there is a will, there is a wine' she creates her path to her ultimate dream: her own winery where she can go wild with her ideas about making sublime wines. In 1999 she started her own wine estate Dominio del Plato in the heart of the Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza. The winery is situated breathtakingly against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. In 2016, the name was changed to Susana Balbo Wines.
The Susana Balbo Malbec from the Signature series is the most beautiful Malbec in the range. The wine comes from the Grandcru area Altamira, San Carlos in the Valle de Uco. The wine has a beautiful deep violet color with exploding aromas of blackberries, black cherries and blueberries framed by hints of herbs and mint. The delicious aromas are reflected on the palate and are accompanied by ripe plum fruit and notes of roasted vanilla, bittersweet chocolate and a hint of mint in the aftertaste. This is a ripe and rich wine style with a long velvety finish.

The impressive 2021 Susana Balbo Signature Malbec has fresh fruit, good ripeness and development of aromas and flavors but with great balance too. This comes from Paraje Altamira and contains some 6% Petit Verdot. It's juicy and has integrated oak and very fine and round tannins. This has to be one of the finest vintages for this bottling. 48,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2022.

From: Argentina: Making It Work with Resilience and Stylistic Ingenuity (Nov 2022)
The 2020 Malbec Signature contains a 4% dash of Cabernet Franc from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley and was aged for 13 months in a third new barrels. A vivid purple in hue. The crisp, woody, aromatic profile offers vivid notes of ripe plum, hints of jam and herbs enhanced by the oak and cedar aromas. Broad and creamy in the mouth with mellow freshness and a juicy flow, the bold expression is sculpted by the tannins from the wood, which also underwrites the long, flavorful finish.

You can say that Susana Balbo Wines has an unusual history. The woman behind this winery actually wanted to study nuclear medicine, but her parents did not allow her to leave Mendoza. Then she surrendered to the family culture: viticulture. She was the first woman in Argentina to become an oenologist and, once a winemaker, the first Argentine woman to be hired for advice by international wineries. In 1999 she started her own winery in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. Her son and daughter also work in the family business. Located at the foot of the Andes mountains, the vineyards benefit from the pure meltwater that flows down in spring and summer. When making her wines, Susana combines the knowledge of the terroir with winemaking techniques. The art of blending, she says, is the way of expressing a winemaker's top talent. The play of aromas and flavors from the different terroirs resembles the color palette used by a painter.
