Description
This Chianti Classico Rocca di Castagnoli is a wine with excellent complexity and structure. The wine shows itself in the glass a beautiful purple-red to red color. In the nose pleasant aromas of cherry scent, combined with spiciness, violets and almond. In the mouth this Chianti is very juicy with nice acids and ripe, lively tannins that, also in the long finish, provide a good harmony. This wine is made from 90% Sangiovese grapes and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino. The grapes come from the 63 hectare plots located around the medieval fortress in the village after which the winery is named. The soil type varies from parts that are rich in Macigno del Chianti and other sandstone to soils that mainly consist of Alberese, limestone areas and schistose argillites, mainly 'Galestro'.
After the harvest in October, the wine ages for at least 1 year in the typical Chianti barrels and for an additional 3 months in steel, after which the wine matures for a further 6 months in the bottle
The Rocca di Castagnoli winery has been very closely involved in the selection of the best Sangiovese clone for Chianti Classico. They make pure wines, with an emphasis on terroir, with Calogero Calì as owner. He has owned Rocca di Castagnoli since 1981 and has since acquired four other wineries, including Poggio Maestrino. He employs an impressive team of winemakers and grape growers, led by Daniele Pagni, to get the wines from all the companies the way he wants them. The end result is never a megalomaniac and expensive blockbuster but rather a digestible and elegant wine for a decent price.

The certified organic 2020 Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts Canaiolo and Coloring, two of the appellation's complementary indigenous red grapes. This wine shows nice balance, dark fruit and a soft texture. Volume and support (the wine is aged in large oak casks for 12 months) is capped by bright acidity. Achieving this steady quality with 200,000 bottles made is quite a feat.

Nice, reductive cherries and plums on the nose with hints of flowers and stones. A pretty, pristine and medium-bodied palate with juicy cherry and plum flavors, coated with chalky tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

A graceful and pretty red, exhibiting strawberry, cherry, currant and white pepper flavors. Stays focused and long on the finish, thanks to a vibrant structure. Sangiovese and Colorino. Drink now through 2028. 20,000 cases made, 5,000 cases imported.

From: Chianti Classico: The Magnificent 2021s (Jul 2024)
The 2022 Chianti Classico is a serious wine. Dark red-toned fruit, leather, spice, tobacco and menthol give this fruity, deep Chianti Classico tons of sheer appeal. The aromatics are a bit open, suggesting the 2022 is best enjoyed over the near and medium term. This is very nicely done.

This producer has been very closely involved in the selection of the best Sangiovese clone for Chianti Classico. They make pure wines, with an emphasis on terroir. Owner Calogero Calì is originally from southern Italy, but earned his money in the legal profession in Milan. He has owned Rocca di Castagnoli since 1981 and has since acquired four other wineries. He employs an impressive team of winemakers and grape growers, led by Daniele Pagni, to get the wines from all companies the way he wants them. The end result is never a megalomaniac and expensive blockbuster, but rather a digestible and elegant wine at a decent price. Rocca di Castagnoli is located in Chianti Classico, just south of Gaiole. The Rocca itself is the tower that marks the highest point of the hamlet of Castagnoli.
Wine was already made here in the Middle Ages. It is a huge estate of 850 hectares of which about 100 are planted with vines. The vineyards are between 380 and 500 meters high. The company has been heavily involved in determining the best Sangiovese clone for Chianti Classico. The wines are known for combining very pure Sangiovese fruit with an emphasis on terroir and for aging well. That is why the wines here are often released a year later than at most other domains.
