Description
The history of Bodega Numanthia and their role within Toro
Bodega Numanthia is one of the most emblematic producers in the Toro region. Founded in the 1990s, the winery aimed to create a modern, precise, and powerful interpretation of the local Tinta de Toro grape. The name refers to the ancient Celtiberian city of Numancia, known for its tenacity. This symbolism perfectly reflects Numanthia's style: wines with enormous concentration, power, and a remarkably long structure.
Toro, located in western Castilla y León, has a long winemaking tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. The region is known for its extreme climate and ancient bush vines that have been preserved ungrafted. Many of these vines are over 50 to 100 years old. The winery works with very low yields and plots that are often still worked by hand. This allows it to select grapes of exceptional quality.
The terroir of Toro and the power of tinta de toro
Toro has a continental climate with hot summers, cold winters, and significant daytime and nighttime temperature variations. These conditions produce intensely ripe grapes with thick skins and deep color. The soil consists primarily of sand, loam, and gravel. This combination provides natural protection against disease and ensures excellent drainage.
Tinta de Toro is a local variety of Tempranillo. The grape is more compact, has smaller berries, and therefore produces wines with high concentration, ripe tannins, and intense aromas. Numanthia is known as one of the best representatives of this style, with wines that demonstrate both power and balance.
The winery and style of Numanthia
Numanthia works with old bush vines spread across a mosaic of small plots. The winery selects only high-quality grapes. Vinification focuses on intensity without sacrificing elegance. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels, where the combination of new and used barrels ensures structure, complexity, and longevity.
Numanthia's style is characterized by powerful tannins, deep dark fruit, a warm spiciness, and a long, layered finish. The wine has clear aging potential and is often considered by connoisseurs to be one of the most serious red wines from western Spain.
Numanthia 2020, a concentrated and harmonious Toro
The 2020 Numanthia showcases the vintage's strength with ripe tannins, intense fruit, and refined balance. The grapes were harvested from old vines with very low yields. The dry and sunny growing season gave the grapes exceptional concentration, yet cool nights preserved their freshness.
The result is a wine that possesses both energy and depth. The aroma reveals black currants, plums, figs, and cocoa, complemented by notes of balsamic vinegar, herbs, and a hint of toast. The wine's palate combines power, length, and structure. The tannins are ripe and precise, and the finish is long and warm with a distinct mineral undertone.
Grapes, harvest and vinification in 2020
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand. Only the healthiest bunches are selected. Fermentation takes place in small vats to maintain maximum control. Skin maceration is carefully monitored to achieve intensity without developing bitterness.
Maturation typically lasts over a year in French oak barrels. Some of the barrels are new and some are used, giving the wine both structure and finesse. This combination gives Numanthia its signature style: full-bodied, layered, and with exceptionally long aging potential.
Color, scent and taste of Numanthia 2020
The color is a deep, almost opaque ruby red. The aroma opens with notes of blackcurrant, plum, licorice, and cocoa, followed by spicy aromas of laurel, licorice, and tobacco. The palate is powerful and full-bodied with a rich structure. The fruit is intense, the tannins are firm yet ripe, and the wine has a long, warm finish.
The wine develops beautifully in the glass and has enough freshness to keep the whole balanced. It's a wine with aging potential that will continue to deepen in the coming years.

Wine and food pairings
Leg of lamb with rosemary and roasted garlic pairs well with the wine's warm spiciness and robust structure. The juicy meat tames the powerful tannins.
Braised beef cheeks with red wine and carrot provide a rich, concentrated base that complements the intensity of Numanthia 2020.
Grilled Iberico Secreto with mushrooms harmonizes with its deep flavor and light smoky sensation, which complements the dark fruit notes of the wine.
Risotto with truffle and aged pecorino provides a creamy counterbalance to the firm structure and emphasises the earthy nuances in the wine.
Roasted eggplant with miso and pine nuts makes a surprisingly good pairing with the spiciness and ripe notes of tinta de toro. The salty depth of the miso pairs beautifully with the wine.

The eponymous 2019 Numanthia is a selection from over 100 small plots averaging 75 years of age. It reflects a warm and ripe year with its 15.5% alcohol and is a powerful and generous red with a full-bodied palate and plenty of ripe black fruit and spices from the élevage. It matured in 60% new barrels and 40% second- and third-use barrels, 20% of them 400-liter ones, for a period of 18 months. The oak feels better integrated in the wine, the tannins are fine-grained, and there is nice balance. 86,000 bottles and 750 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2021.
The vineyards from the LVMH group in Toro continue the process to obtain organic certification, and 90% of the grapes are already certified. They are replacing the vats with smaller ones and the barriques with foudres to adjust the impact of the oak in their wines. They are planting new vines following the keyline system and are creating an experimental plot with a selection of their old vines, looking for plots with a better balance between pH and acidity. In general, they are changing the style of the wines toward less ripeness, extractions and oak. They have 85 hectares in property, lease another 21 and have long-term contracts with the owners of a further 34. With that, they produce an average of 250,000 bottles per year.

From: Reds From Toro: Old Vines and New Knowhow (Dec 2023)
The 2018 Numanthia, sourced from old vines in Toro, spent 18 months in French oak (60% new, 1/5 in 400-liter barrels). Garnet in hue. It exudes red fruits, plums and wild herbs on the nose, with cedar, vanilla, dried flowers and furniture wax. Dry and rich, it offers a creamy, overwhelming palate with polished tannins and a silky texture, leading to a plush, flavorful finish. This is a well-balanced and nuanced Toro.

Established in the late 1990s in Valdefinjas, Toro, Numanthia quickly gained a reputation, becoming part of the LVMH portfolio in 2005. Numanthia produces red wines in its simple yet charming winery, where small tanks are the norm. Since 2015, they have been experimenting with new regional wine styles featuring slightly less structure and fresher fruits. The eloquent result is evident in the 2018 Numanthia. This year, the estate will release a new wine, a blend of vintages aged in barrels and amphorae, called Termanthia Ipse. Jesús Jiménez is the technical director.
