Description
100 percent Nebbiolo is your glass. The top winery Montaribaldi which in our opinion has more to offer than most (much) more expensive Barolos. The Sori is one of the top wines of the winery of the Talliano brothers. Originating from the vineyard "on the south" (=Sori), on the slope near the house. A top plot, which produces increasingly better wine. The vineyard is located in the municipality of Barbaresco and is located at an altitude of 270 meters with a southern (sori) exposure. This is one of the reasons why this vineyard produces wonderfully beautifully ripened Nebbiolo grapes. The land around it is all from Gaja. Thanks to the perfect location of the vineyards of Montaribaldi and the typical white soil of the hills in Langa, the elegant wines that come from there are destined for a long life. Montaribaldi is a specialist in terroir wines, not a chemistry factory, because good wine comes from a good vineyard and a vintage should reflect the terroir, is Luciano's opinion, and we fully support this. This version is a double magnum (jeroboam) of 3 liters, which is packed in a beautiful gift box. Even tastier and an even longer storage potential.
The grapes are destemmed and macerated for 14 days, 4 days at a temperature of 30 to 32°C, 10 days at 27 to 28°C. At the end of the fermentation process, the wine is put in new oak barrels for 2 years. After a light purification, the wine is bottled and remains in the cellars of Montaribaldi for another year, after which the Sori Barberesco is released onto the market.
The 2020 Sori Barberesco is a very elegant wine and very rich in aroma. In the glass, the wine has a deep garnet red color with orange reflections. The scent of roses and violets are clearly visible and mix well with the scent of plums, tobacco, cocoa, cloves and black peppers. Powerful, strong tannins, sweet and velvety. Length. Advice is certainly to give the wine some oxygen in its early years and to open the wine 2 hours in advance and then you will get a mighty beautiful glass of wine. Balance, length, intensity and concentration of flavors, everything is right about this wine. So enjoy and this Barbaresco DOCG Sorì Montarbaldi is perfect to combine with red and roasted meat and savory old cheese. Double Magnum version
BAROLO VS BARBERESCO
Piedmont - synonymous with truffles, risotto and, of course, delicious wines! - is considered one of Italy's premier wine regions. The local conditions of terrain, soil and weather produce some fantastic wines. As for the reds, the Barolos and Barbarescos are world-famous, powerful, ageing wines. Despite Barolo and Barbaresco being made from the same grape, Nebbiolo, and produced in neighbouring regions within 10 miles of each other, the wines of Barbaresco and Barolo have some distinctive differences.
The Barbaresco area is located south of the Tanaro river and due to its location the area has a slightly higher average temperature which allows the Nebbiolo grape to ripen slightly earlier than in the Barolo area. Young tannins in a young Barbaresco are often not as hard as Barolo and under DOCG rules it is permitted to release Barbaresco for sale a year earlier than Barolo. The most pronounced difference between the two wines is that the tannins of Barbaresco tend to soften more quickly making the wine more approachable at a younger age than Barolo. The Barbaresco area is smaller than the Barolo area with an annual production of around 35% of Barolo production which means that Barbaresco is not as widely available on the market.

The 2001 Barbaresco Sori Montaribaldi is even better than the Palazzina, more powerful on the nose with sweet and penetrating notes of licorice and chocolate, firmer and more sustained on the palate but with the tell-tale roundness and solidity of a high quality extraction. Drink: 2005-2017.

The 'azienda agricola Montaribaldi' is historically a family business, located in the middle of the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. The Montaribaldi winery has been owned by the Taliano family from the beginning and has 19 hectares in the Barberesco area. In 1994 Luciano and Roberto took over the company from their father and immediately decided to only produce high quality wines. It is still a real family business, father Guiseppe and mother Carla as well as the wives of the owners, Antonella and Franca all cooperate. At present they produce about 75000 bottles a year. Thanks to the perfect location of the vineyards of Montaribaldi and the typical white soil of the hills in Langhe, the elegant wines that come from them have a long life. Note that the land around the Montaribaldi vineyards is from Gaja. The family makes some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines, from grapes typical of this region. Typical of this winery is that the wines have their origin in Piedmont, are always recognizable as a 'Montaribaldi' wine and are sustainably grown and produced. As they call it themselves: making 'vineyard wines' distinguishes them from others.
