Description
Kongsgaard and the tradition of characterful Chardonnay
Kongsgaard is one of Napa Valley's most unique and distinctive producers. The estate is known for its intense, layered, yet exceptionally refined Chardonnay style, where power never sacrifices tension. John Kongsgaard and his son Alex work with an almost Burgundian eye for detail, focusing on low yields, minimal intervention, and extended aging. Under the Winery tab, you can read more background information about the estate and the philosophy that has shaped Kongsgaard's international prestige.
The Napa Valley Chardonnay is one of the house's most consistent wines: rich, pure, expressive, and with a texture that remains both opulent and precise. The 2020 edition showcases this signature with impressive nuance.
The special character of the 2020 harvest
2020 was a challenging year for many Napa Valley producers. Heat stress, limited water resources, and a tumultuous harvest made conditions difficult. For Kongsgaard, this meant the complete loss of its own vineyard. Nevertheless, John and Alex were able to produce Chardonnay thanks to their close relationship with the MacDonald family, who own old, pruned Chardonnay vineyards in Napa Valley.
These vineyards yielded high-quality grapes, full of tension and aromatic clarity. The result is a Chardonnay with remarkable balance: rich and creamy, but never heavy, with precision and lightness that are exceptional in this warm year.
Vinification and maturation
Kongsgaard uses a very traditional approach to Chardonnay, inspired by old European methods. The grapes are pressed without prior fining, allowing fermentation to take place on the entire press juice. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in French oak barrels, some of which are new, and is slow.
The wine is given ample time to develop on the lees, which creates its characteristic creaminess and complexity. At the same time, the house deliberately avoids excessive bâtonnage, preserving tension and freshness. The combination of intensity and refinement is the result of this precise and restrained approach.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2020 Kongsgaard Chardonnay
The wine opens with aromas of peach, ripe apple, and citrus confit. This is followed by notes of mint, lemon peel, mandarin oil, and subtle floral notes. This layered aromatic profile gives the wine an immediate elegance. Light tropical nuances develop in the background, never overpowering but adding depth to the aroma.
On the palate, the wine displays a distinct creaminess, yet without any heaviness. The texture is rich and satiny, supported by a fine acidity that keeps the wine lively and precise. Stone fruit, citrus, and floral notes alternate, while a hint of almond and soft spices adds complexity. The wine remains balanced throughout, with a beautiful harmony between ripeness and freshness.
The finish is long, clean, and convincing, with notes of lemon oil, peach peel, and a subtle tropical touch. The freshness connects all the layers, making the wine feel both modern and classic. The whole reveals a refinement rare in this challenging vintage.
Storage potential
The 2020 edition is already drinking beautifully thanks to its open structure and elegant balance, but it has sufficient concentration to continue developing until at least 2030. In the bottle, notes of hazelnut, brioche, and honey will slowly unfold, while the citrus and stone fruit accents gain depth. The wine will become rounder with age without losing its refined freshness.

A barrel sample, the 2018 Chardonnay bursts from the glass with bold notes of warm peaches, spiced pears and applesauce with hints of candied ginger, honeycomb and lime cordial. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has electric intensity, with a refreshing line of racy acid cutting through the tightly wound stone fruit and spicy layers, finishing long and honey laced.
“There is a trade-off,” Alex Kongsgaard told me when I asked he and his father, John, about the benefits of their extended barrel age regime for the Chardonnays. “With more time in barrel, the wine gains more complexity. But if you go too far, then you overwhelm the terroir. The place becomes less transparent. For us, there’s a sweet spot. We like to have the fruit at the background. Our wine has enough inherent structure that it thrives on that. The terroir gives it the structure so that it can take more and more in terms of natural fermentation, long elevage, etc.” Robert Parker once called Kongsgaard’s technique “The Death & The Resurrection.” Clearly, it works—these classically forged Chardonnays are consistently jaw-droppingly incredible. The 2017s and 2018s couldn’t get more different in terms of styles, but The Judge vineyard’s signature clearly, impactfully, beautifully shines through. I can’t recommend these wines highly enough.

From: Napa Valley: The Frantic 2020s & Stunning 2021s (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) is exquisite. That's all there is to it. Creamy and rich, yet not at all heavy, the Napa Valley Chardonnay is perhaps a bit understated, but also avoids the edginess of so many other wines in this vintage. Orchard fruit, mint, lemon confit and tangerine oil open first. Pretty floral and tropical accents grace the finish in this classy, polished Chardonnay from John and Alex Kongsgaard.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2022
John and Alex Kongsgaard endured another tough vintage in 2020. The Kongsgaards lost all their estate fruit in 2020, but were able to source some fruit from the old, head-trained blocks at MacDonald. Brothers Graeme and Alex MacDonald made their wine at the Kongsgaard winery for many years, so there is a connection between the two families. Sadly, the Kongsgaard MacDonald Cabernet is a one-and-done proposition.

Kongsgaard Wine is a family-owned business in Napa Valley, California. It was founded in the late 1970s by John and Maggy Kongsgaard. John Kongsgaard is a renowned winemaker and viticulturist known for his dedication to producing high-quality wines in small batches.
Kongsgaard Winery: A family-driven icon from California
Kongsgaard is one of the best-kept secrets of Napa Valley. This small-scale, family-run winery is known for its profound, expressive wines that stay true to classic European styles, particularly those from Burgundy and the Rhône. Founded by John Kongsgaard, former winemaker at Newton and Arietta, the estate has quickly developed into a true cult label among wine enthusiasts.
The vineyards are located in the cooler, higher-altitude areas of Napa, including the famed Atlas Peak. Here, the combination of elevation, poor soils, and sea breezes results in slow ripening and a perfect balance between power and elegance.
Burgundian precision in American soil
What sets Kongsgaard apart is its uncompromising approach in both vineyard and cellar. Yields are deliberately kept low to ensure concentration and finesse. In the cellar, full fermentation takes place in oak, including malolactic fermentation, using only native yeasts. The result? Wines with great texture, complexity, and an almost ethereal balance.
The most renowned wine of the estate is undoubtedly the Kongsgaard Chardonnay, often described as one of the most impressive white wines in America. Additionally, the Syrah and the Bordeaux-style blend The Judge are examples of the power and depth the estate can achieve, without ever losing sight of elegance.
Production of Kongsgaard wines
Production at Kongsgaard is extremely limited. Only a few thousand bottles are produced each year, which limits availability worldwide. This enhances the cult status of the estate and makes obtaining a bottle a true discovery. At Grandcruwijnen, we offer a selection of these rare gems for the true connoisseur.
