Persoonlijke gegevens
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso enjoys a perfect location with its vineyards situated on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary, the Rio dos Patos, or the River of the Ducks. Consequently, the ducks on the labels are its trademark. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes, a luxury few vineyards enjoy. This partly explains why this winery can produce very fine wines, as there is never a water shortage. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo influenced by the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening.
The Herdade do Sobroso Sobro Branco is a blend of typical Portuguese grapes: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Verdelho, and Palomino. The grapes were hand-picked. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 30 days, after which it is allowed to mature on its lees. The Blanco Sobro (or Branco in Portuguese) has a straw-yellow color and is very clear. This Portuguese white wine is delightfully fresh on the palate, with fresh aromas of citrus and passion fruit. The wine is very elegant and strikes a good balance between fruit and acidity. A lovely glass to enjoy on its own and highly recommended with shellfish and white fish varieties with a touch of spice.

1. Grilled sea bass with lemon and fresh herbs
The juicy texture of the fish pairs beautifully with the fresh acidity of the wine, while the lemon accentuates the citrus aromas.
2. Salad of mango, avocado, and shrimp
The fruity notes of mango and the creaminess of avocado harmonize well with the lively acidity and tropical aromas of the wine.
3. Fried green asparagus with lemon butter sauce
The fresh and elegant style of the wine supports the subtle bitterness of the asparagus, while the citrus acidity enlivens the sauce.
4. Tagliatelle with ricotta, lemon zest and fresh broad beans
A light, creamy pasta dish that contrasts with the freshness of the wine, while the lemon zest bridges the gap to the citrus notes in the glass.
5. Sea bream ceviche with passion fruit and lime
The acidity of the lime and the fruit of the passion fruit enhance the fresh character of the wine and ensure a perfect balance.
6. Scallop tartare with cucumber, apple, and yuzu
The combination of scallop sweetness, apple freshness, and the soft citrusy sharpness of yuzu plays into the fine structure and fruity character of the wine.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.
Herdade do Sobroso history & location
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.
The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.
Which grape varieties grow here?
Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.
Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso
One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.
A few fun facts
- The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
- There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
- The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.
Herdade do Sobroso as an experience
Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
