Winery

GD Vajra is one of the most respected producers in Barolo and is known for its refined and terroir-driven style. The family business, based in Vergne near Barolo, operates entirely organically and with great attention to detail in both the vineyard and the cellar. Vajra consciously chooses elegance over power and lets the vineyards speak for themselves. The Coste di Rose is one of their most refined crus, where finesse and precision take center stage. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.

Origin and terroir

Coste di Rose is located in the municipality of Barolo and is known for its relatively cool location and calcareous soils. The vineyard faces an eastern exposure, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and gradually. This results in wines with more freshness and a more elegant profile than many other Barolos. The soil, rich in limestone and marl, contributes to the mineral structure and refinement of the wine.

Grapes and vineyard management

This Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo, sourced from carefully selected plots within Coste di Rose. The vineyards are cultivated organically, without the use of synthetic agents. Yields are deliberately kept low to ensure concentration and quality. The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected so that only the best fruit is used.

Vinification and aging

After the harvest, the grapes are slowly fermented with a relatively long maceration to build structure and aromatic complexity. Aging takes place in large wooden barrels, where the use of wood remains subtle and the focus lies on the grape and the terroir. During this period, the wine also undergoes sur lie aging, which provides extra texture and depth. The approach is aimed at balance and precision, without over-extraction.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a bright garnet red color. On the nose, refined aromas of dried roses, berries, and white pepper emerge, complemented by a distinct mineral undertone. On the palate, the wine is elegant and crisp, with a chalky texture and fine tannins. The structure is linear and precise, with fresh acidity providing tension and length. The finish is clean and persistent.

Style and character

This Barolo reveals a more restrained and refined side of the appellation. Not a heavy or broad style, but rather elegance, freshness, and detail. The wine has a clear focus on structure and finesse, with an energetic character and great precision. This makes it more accessible in its youth, but also suitable for further aging.

Volume

The 2020 vintage in Piedmont produced wines with a beautiful balance between ripeness and freshness. The conditions resulted in aromatic grapes with good structure and soft tannins. This Coste di Rose displays that profile with precision and elegance. The wine is already appealing but can develop further in the coming years.

Food and wine pairings

This Barolo comes into its own with classic dishes such as ossobuco, game, or stews. The wine also pairs excellently with dishes containing mushrooms or truffles. Additionally, the fresh acidity and refined structure make it suitable for dishes with poultry or roasted meat.

G.D. Vajra is a testament to the harmonious relationship between terroir and the rich legacy of a passionate winemaking family. Situated in the renowned Barolo appellation, this enchanting estate has been crafting exceptional wines for generations, capturing the essence of the land and the profound stories that shaped their journey.

The cornerstone of G.D. Vajra's wine making philosophy lies in the concept of terroir. Every bottle that bears their name is an expression of the unique characteristics of the vineyards and the distinct microclimates that bless the Langhe region. From the ethereal vineyard of Bricco delle Viole to the enchanting slopes of Fossati and Ravera, each parcel of land is meticulously tended, allowing the grapes to mature and develop their individual personalities.

The Vajra family, led by the visionary Aldo Vajra, has been nurturing vineyards and crafting wines since the 1970s. Aldo made his first organic wines at the age of 18 and became one of the first wineries to replant the forgotten grape variety Freisa.  He continued to innovate with the plantings of less traditional varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir. The Vajra family to this day remain steadfast in their commitment to sustainable practices, seeking to preserve the natural biodiversity of their vineyards for generations to come.

The Vajra family's winemaking journey is a testament to their unwavering love for their heritage. With a blend of tradition and innovation, they have honed their craft over the years, producing wines that carry the spirit of their ancestors. Whether it's the iconic Barolo, the elegant Dolcetto, or the vibrant Barbera, each bottle is a reflection of the Vajra family's deep-rooted passion and dedication.
