Bodegas Emilio Moro "Malleolus Sanchomartin" Ribera Del Duero is a red wine from the Castilla y Leon region in Spain. The absolute top in the Emilio Moro range. Pricey, but compared to many grands crus classés from Bordeaux of the same quality still a great opportunity. The Sancho Martin comes from a vineyard of only 0.84ha so supply is extremely limited. The Sancho Martin is one of the most sublime tempranillo wines from Bodegas Emilio Moro. Named in honor of the Pago de Sanchomartín, a vineyard located in Pesquera de Duero, which was planted in 1944. It is a wine with a great variety, but with the personality of the limestone soils. It stands out as a powerful, elegant and persistent wine.

The 2019 vegetative cycle was preceded by April rains. However, from mid-spring to late summer, the year was marked by scarce rainfall and higher than expected temperatures. The harvest began after a few rainy days, which helped to balance the grapes’ composition and resulted in a year of exceptional quality and optimum health.

The vineyard is located on a terroir of a mixture of sandy clay, marl and limestone. Both the malolactic fermentation and aging are carried out in new French oak barrels. The maturation lasts for 18 months. In the glass, the wine has an intense, deep cherry red color. Complex and elegant aromas with subtle, floral notes, that the liqueurs, mulberry and blackcurrant. The balsamic notes of the oak are perfectly integrated into the ensemble of the wine. On the palate warm and sweet with balanced acidity and great quality of tannins that is caressing in the palate. The wine has a warm aftertaste that lasts forever. Of this great 2019 Sancho Martin only around 2,000 bottles maximum were made. This is a magnum version of 1.5 liters.

For more than 130 years, Emilio Moro has been one of the defining names of Spain's Ribera del Duero wines. Built on generations of vineyard expertise and a deep respect for old vines, the family estate produces elegant, terroir-driven wines that consistently rank among the region's finest expressions of Tinto Fino.

A Family Legacy in Ribera del Duero

The Moro family's connection to viticulture dates back to 1892, when the first generation began cultivating vineyards in Pesquera de Duero, one of the historic villages at the heart of the appellation. Today, the fourth generation continues the family's vision, combining generations of knowledge with modern winemaking while remaining firmly rooted in tradition.

The estate owns approximately 200 hectares of vineyards, many planted with Tinto Fino, the local expression of Tempranillo. Some vineyard parcels are more than 90 years old and continue to produce naturally low yields, resulting in wines with remarkable concentration, depth and elegance. The vineyards lie between 750 and 950 metres above sea level, where warm daytime temperatures and cool nights help preserve freshness, colour and aromatic complexity. These altitude differences are one of the key reasons why the region produces wines with both power and finesse.

Old Vines and the Character of Tinto Fino

Although the Moro family had cultivated vineyards for generations, the first wines under the Emilio Moro label were released in 1987. Since then, the estate has become one of Spain's benchmark wineries, combining meticulous vineyard management with continuous investment in research, sustainability and innovation.

One of the estate's distinguishing features is its careful preservation of historic Tinto Fino plant material. Rather than relying solely on commercial clones, many of today's vineyards originate from selections made from the family's oldest vines. This unique genetic heritage contributes to the consistency, balance and distinctive identity found throughout the portfolio.

Unlike many Spanish producers, Emilio Moro does not place the emphasis on traditional ageing classifications such as Crianza or Reserva. Instead, each wine is named to reflect its vineyard origin or individual personality. From the vibrant Finca Resalso to the flagship bottlings sourced from exceptional old-vine parcels, every wine offers a different expression of the region and showcases the remarkable versatility of Tinto Fino.

International Recognition and the Moro Family Today

Today, Emilio Moro exports its wines to more than 70 countries and is widely regarded as one of Spain's leading wineries. The estate consistently receives outstanding ratings from internationally respected critics including Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Vinous and Wine Spectator. Its reputation for combining traditional vineyard practices with modern winemaking has earned recognition well beyond Spain, making Emilio Moro one of the benchmark producers of Spanish fine wine.

Following the passing of Emilio Moro in 2008, the family continued to build on his vision while remaining committed to the values that made the estate successful. In the same year, the Emilio Moro Foundation was established to support projects that provide access to clean drinking water and improve living conditions in developing communities, reflecting the family's belief that success should also benefit society.
